NAACP calls for protests of GOP

RALEIGH (AP) — One of North Carolina’s top civil rights leaders urged residents on Monday to organize non-violent protests to bring attention to what he considers a Republican crusade against poor and minority residents.

The Rev. William Barber of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People called for action against the GOP supermajority in the state legislature, but he did not announce specific plans to demonstrate against a voter identification bill expected Wednesday in the House.

The bill that would require voters to present photo identification at the polls is one of many Barber has attacked as part of a wider agenda targeting poor and minority voters. He also has criticized action against expanding Medicaid under federal health care reform, cutting unemployment benefits, ending the state’s earned income tax credit, promoting charter schools and changing voting periods or adding new restrictions.

“When you look at the attack on the sick, the attack on the unemployed, the attacks on education, the attack on the incarcerated, the attack on fundamental voting rights and combine all of that together, we are at a crisis,” Barber said.

While he said action might not come Wednesday, civil rights leaders are hopeful they can change some minds as they bring attention to broader issues of voting rights.

“If not, and looking at what’s happened, we’re looking very seriously at how the courts will be used … how will our pulpits be used, how will we use voter registration, how will we use the gift of prayer, and yes, how will we use the moral stance of civil disobedience,” he said.

The voter ID bill has passed two committees over the opposition of Democrats, who argue it adds new barriers to combat non-existent voter fraud. A 2011 effort to pass voter ID legislation was halted that year by the veto pen of then-Gov. Beverly Perdue. But Republicans now have the numbers to override a governor’s check and Gov. Pat McCrory supports the new measure.

RangerSgt, You're ideals of the Black family are wrong. As if every Lumbee house has a dad and a mom in the home...look around you!!Lumbees are still trying to get those free Indian checks that the real Indians are stopping them from getting...because their(yall) aren't real american Indians. There are so many Lumbee women and girls turning to the black men and boys for love and having baby's that the Lumbee clan is soon to be back to their true roots. That say's alot for you Lumbee men whom can't and aren't taking care of your self contained Lumbee women. Robeson County is in first place for so many negative things in North Carolina. Such as produceing the dummest kids in the state, the highest unemployment rate, the highest syphillis epidemic which took place in your fine city of Pembroke. With the staggering numbers of syphillis cases in Purnell Swett high school. That school is 85% Lumbee. So when you talk about people getting their communities together look outside your window. Far as education...the Lumbees aren't any better than anyone else in this county...check yourself!! bigotry is your ignorance.

The problems endured by this county have nothing to do with the shade of anyone's skin or the heritage they claim. As Ranger pointed out, the breakdown of the family is a blight on this entire nation, and it is particularly epidemic in Rob Co. If more people in this county of all backgrounds would stop stacking up and/or making babies they are not equipped to raise, then everyone would be better off.

I really don't understand why we are talking about and worrying about so much junk, when we need to be working about real problems like helping people that are willing to work find work, helping these young children with all these mental issues get help so they aren't on channel 13 news where they have become serial killers. I mean what's the big issue about having a freaking Id get for real this is just foolish. And as far as prison if you have served your time that should be it, your rights should be restored, and i have never been to prison.Everyone should work together it's our county not just one person. I have an id and don't mind showing it, i'm not wanted by any police and even if i was they could see it to.

Dear Mr Editor

I'm wondering why my comments weren't printed? I simply stated that everyone needs a photo I'd already to assess services available to the "poor,". And I also suggested that this man would have greater creedance if instead if harping on democrats not being allowed to core and instead talk about remedying some of the problems in the African American community, such as the rate of out of wedlock births, the toll taken on children in homes where no husband is present to fill the roll of father, of the crime rate, of how young black men eschew education, seeing it as "not cool" then he would get my select.

However, I guess we see what happens when someone makes a non PC statement, like Bill Cosby, who spoke out on these issues years back, and was ostracized for doing this. Access to voting is not the main problem in Mr. Barbers advocacy group. The disintegration of the black family, spurred on by direct government policies is the primary thing to blame.

If you will not print this, I would be much obliged to know why.

Ranger

This looks fine to print. I might have missed the other comment. I am not allowing racial comments on stories with no racial element, or comments that are clearly made to incite or anger people. It is art, not science, but my tolerance is thin. I am very busy, and don't have time to referee.

Anyone wanting to know why a comment was not published can call me at 910-272-6104.

Donnie, again free speech and opinion are slipping away in fear of offending. I remember you telling me you were "not afraid of the written word" some time ago. I know this is your site and manage it as you see fit, but it's our site too. A place where we can set things straight about the good, bad and the ugly in Robeson.

We're all adults here, we can take it...well most of us can but, you censor us because of a few, the weak ones. They are weak because they've never heard some of the things me and others say here. It does open eyes, and who cares if they're offended and call us names, I'm called names all the time(so what).

You mentioned "incite", you can't incite grown intelligent adults without physical harm, these are "written words". Sticks and stones will break my bones but, yadda yadda.....

So again the ones in the minority(numbers here) are dictating freedom and opinion of the majority...

It's a twisted world, and I'm a bit disappointed in you for caving, sir.

This man believes blacks and other minorities are too ignorant to obtain an ID. 98% of all minorities already have an ID, show it like you do for everything else when you vote. The 2% who don't have one, they'll be free for you. Just go get it, IT COSTS YOU NOTHING.

This race hustler William Fats Barber is being used by the powers to say this. Others couldn't get away with saying this. You have to have an ID for free stuff at the DSS, and guess who shops there....THE POOR AND THE MINORITIES......

William(Billy), Id love to have a public conversation on your favorite subject RACE...that is my favorite subject too...and I'm good at it.

Attack on the incarcerated ... Really? By that logic, I guess Willie is saying that all folks in prison are democraps. I would strongly consider changing party affiliation. I guess all judges and juries must be republicans just trying to keep the democraps down. By the way, I am both a minority and poor (just look at my bank account). I do not receive any government assistance, I pay my bills, and even refuse to drive a government motors vehicle. I looked around and found that it is not the republicans attacking me/ stealing what I have worked for. The republicans has been so kind as to leave that to the real crooks like the democraps waiting to get into prison and the county convictioners. Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that i am registered as a democrap too so that I can at least get a vote in local elections where most elections are decided in the primaries. I guess that makes me an Uncle Tom... I would much rather be a free republican/ independent than a locked-up democrap. Just Saying...

You can register as unaffiliated and vote in either primary you wish. That way you can vote in local Dem only primaries when necessary without having your good name linked to either corrupt party.

I would like to know why the Rev. Barber is so afraid of voter ID. We have to show ID for almost everything else we do in life. Voting for our elected officials is very important, but we don't need a voter ID. Doesn't make sense to me. Ending the state’s earned income tax credit, is a great idea. We could save millions. Everyone should be tested for drugs when they apply for any type of assistance. Fail the drug test, get nothing. We would save millions.

Believing that people should prove who they are in order to vote is an attack on poor people and minorities? When is the protest against the liquor store attacking the poor and minorities by asking for photo ID?

Rev. Will (as he calls himself) looks like he could move away from the table a bit sooner, or use smaller eating utensils. Makes Notorious BIG look like a Somali refugee..Does he have anything better to do with his time? The Civil Rights act was passed because of the Republicans. He needs to know that. And keeping his folks dependant on Government is a Democrat thing. It's called "buying support'. Now they do it with overlapping programs, and "free" cellphones and healthcare..and "free" houses..He also needs to know that the Democrats control the Senate and Executive branches..And the only folks that are against legality checks to vote are DEMOCRATS. And multiple voters are always DEMOCRATS

Well said, sagehopper. Those dependent on government are exactly where the democrats want them; Poor and dependent so they will continue to vote for them. All the while, they are still poor with no hope to get anywhere in life. Every poor individual, black, white, or purple, has access to practically free education. Take advantage of this and better yourselves.

Happy 236th
Thousands of people were dazzled by the fireworks display at the annual Lumberton Family Fourth celebration at the Lumberton High School football stadium on Tuesday. Many watched the display from parking lots and sidewalks around town and from their own front yards. Before the show, attendees were treated to a performance by the Carolina Breakers, and a stunt by the Army Rangers, who parachuted onto the football field.
