MAXTON — The Maxton Board of Commissioners on Tuesday named veteran police Officer Tammy Deese as the town’s new police chief.

Deese has been serving as interim chief since former Police Chief Damon Williams left in June to lead the Tarboro Police Department.

Deese is the first woman to serve as Maxton’s top law enforcement officer. The only other woman currently serving as a chief in Robeson County is Tammy Lowery, chief of the Parkton Police Department.

Deese, 38, has been a Maxton police officer for more than 17 years. She served as the town’s interim chief back in late 2009 following the retirement of Chief Paul McDowell and before the hiring of Williams in April 2010.

“All of my experience (in law enforcement) and training has been in Maxton,” Deese said. “It’s time to give back to the community.”

The new chief was sworn in by Amy McCrimmon, a local magistrate, before a packed courtroom that included fellow police officers.

“The best man for this job is a woman,” Deese said jokingly while thanking the commissioners, friends and relatives for their confidence in her.

Commissioner James McDougald’s vote was the lone one against Deese becoming chief. He told The Robesonian after the meeting that he believes there needs to be more police visibility in areas of the town where the most crime occurs, something that he said has not happened with Deese as acting chief.

“There’s not been police action,” McDougald said. “Law enforcement here needs to be more proactive.”

Deese will supervise a department that includes eight full-time officers, five part-time officers, four full-time dispatchers and one part-time dispatcher.

“She is going to run a tight department,” McDowell, the former chief, said. “She’s a very good supervisor. She’s going to raise the bar … . Tammy is a very dependable, fair and an honest person.”

Evelyn Williams was one of several people who told the commissioners they had made the right choice in naming Deese chief.

“When she first started working here I knew we had a keeper,” Williams said. “I’ve seen officers come and go, but I could tell she loves people. You have to love the town and people you serve.”

James McEachin, a longtime community activist, said that the appointment of Deese as chief is overdue.

“The community loves you,” he said.

Deese is currently studying criminal justice at The University of North Carolina at Pembroke. She also is a paramedic.

Deese told The Robesonian that being a woman should not be a disadvantage for her in overseeing her department and carrying out her duties in the community.

“I’ve earned respect in the community and of the officers,” she said.

In other business, the commissioners amended an ordinance dealing with the qualifications for appointment, reappointment and removal of individuals appointed by the commissioners to serve on town boards and commissions.

How are you going to evaluate your new chief of police? What should you be looking for? And how should she be evaluated? For insight and direction on this and other important police improvement issues, take a look at “Arrested Development: A Veteran Police Chief Sounds Off About Protest, Racism, Corruption and the Seven Steps Necessary to Improve Our Nation’s Police” (Amazon.com in US and EU). And the blog at http://improvingpolice.wordpress.com/ where other current police improvement issues are discussed. Good luck and may we all experience not just good but great policing! Great policing is accomplished by police who are well-trained and led, restrained in their use of force, honest, and courteous to every person.

@ mrlumbee "Please they hired him for the same reason his new town hired him, he did a good job" Let not rag on Chief Williams. They hired him because of the good things he did in our town. I have high hopes for Chief Deese. But most of us in Maxton really liked Chief Williams and wish him the best. I hope Chief Deese does as much with our youth as Williams has done. Congrats to her on her new role.

Mr. Knight you have know clue as to how wrong you are. Williams is not what you think or say he is, and please don't make me put it to you straight so you will know the real deal.

Dr. Knight they hired Chief Williams to be Chief of Police, Not to be Chief/Captain of the Step Team @ Townsend. You have a school officer, why not let them handle the step team? Other than that what did he do for the youth? Give them a slap on the back & send them home when they got in trouble. I am sure Chief Deese will do right by our youth, because she loves kids as much as any Chief that Maxton has had!

Mcdougald is Narcissitic, dishonest,A coward, and a Armchair-Warrior...Several additional adjectives could be added but it will take up too much space. The problem didn't appear at the last town hall meeting, when he refused to endorse Tammy Deese as Top-Cop. His foolishness is almost comical.

Mcdougald only cares about McDougald, his only friend is his mother. If you don't kiss his horse end, he doesn't like you. His smear campaigns about Town Officials , and Maxton Officers originate from "Criminals and drug abusers". He loved his Damon Williams, because Williams was the idiotic puppet he was looking for. The rumor around town was Williams was to clear house.Every officer that was under Paul McDonald was to be fired.....I don't like the MAXTON Police Department...but, they sure as hell proved they knew more than that idiot Williams, and his motley Crüe.......Tammy Deese is more qualified to run MAXTON than any Chief before her. every officer , Deputy, Civilian, and Damon Williams will tell you......Tammy Deese is more aggressive than all her predecessors .If McDougald did his homework he would know that..........McDougald is part of the problem , he isn't part of the solution. Instead of spreading rumors about the Police officers that work for him, he needs to help the town get more officers........

McDougald cannot fathom one thing..." a fool gives advise over the phone, instead of letting the General lead his Army". In this case" her Army"

Long time coming Tammy! You and Jamie Oxendine are good people and even a greater asset to Maxton. We all started Green Grove together thru South Robeson.

I never understood why they hired a outsider (Williams) for chief in the first place. Congradulations!

Mr. McDougald is good for saying or publishing things that he considers to be facts, when in actuality he has no clue. It was not to long ago that he did the same thing against the fire department, during the last elections, and he will continue to publish untruths in his newspaper because no one has stepped up to say or do anything about it. He was the only commissioner that voted against Tammy becoming chief, and his reason for this according to him was because he felt like there was no police presence in the areas where crime was high. My suggestion to Mr. McDougald is to let the police department do there job, and you concentrate on being a commisioner, and stop being so critical before you have facts. But anyway, big congratulations to our new chief, Mrs. Tammy Deese.

I hope Mr. Mcdougal contuines to speak his mind. We still have a lot of problems in Maxton.

Dr. Knight you have got to be kidding me. Speaking your mind is one thing, but smear tactics are something totally different. Why was this not an issue when Williams was chief? This all came about when Tammy Deese was named the new chief. So once again I say please get your facts in order before you start agreeing with the lying ways of Mr. McDougald..

there's a lot of correction needing to be made to your comment trutalk. if you was not so busy? maybe, if you weren't so busy would've sounded a little more intelligent. McDougald is just a man that doesn't need a wife. it sounds like to me he may be jealous of a woman being over the police officers. i'm proud of her. it just shows, a woman can do more things than a man will ever be able to.

I am going to be nicer and hope that this post is accepted. You don't know me, therefore my level of intelligence is unknown to you. If you would have read my post, then you would realize that i am a supporter of the new Chief... Just as you are. With that said Good Luck Chief Deese. No further comments... Thanks.

McDougald... Apparently you have noticed the recent arrest made in Maxton. Deese has been a key figure in the recent fight against gangs in Maxton. The recent 7 arrest is sign a being proactive. Yes there was this one incident... But have you looked at the recent gang activities in Lumberton... Which these guys are a spin-off of. Instead of going after one shooter... They went after ALL... Is that not proactive. There is constant patrol in Holly Court...aka Holly-Hood. . . If you was not so busy trying to buy the old gym for your personal agenda... You would see what she has done. She has given you 17 years in law enforcement and several years as a VOLUNTEER in other emergency entities. . . So apparently Maxton is important to her. How about giving her a chance before giving her the bad mouth. . . Or you can bring someone in from the outside to build his or her resume... Then leave.(not an intended jab at D. Williams because I like him also). Congrats Chief Deese!

Happy 236th
Thousands of people were dazzled by the fireworks display at the annual Lumberton Family Fourth celebration at the Lumberton High School football stadium on Tuesday. Many watched the display from parking lots and sidewalks around town and from their own front yards. Before the show, attendees were treated to a performance by the Carolina Breakers, and a stunt by the Army Rangers, who parachuted onto the football field.
