Man dies following fight with deputies

Staff report

PARKTON — A well-known Parkton man who battled mental illness has died after being stunned twice with a Taser by Robeson County sheriff’s deputies.

George McKeachen, better known around the small town as “Scooby,” died Friday morning at Southeastern Regional Medical Center. He was taken there after sheriff’s deputies tried to subdue him near the 301 Kwik Shop at 23011 U.S. 301 at about 7:23 a.m., according to a statement from the Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies responded to a call about McKeachen’s disorderly conduct and found him near the store, Sheriff Kenneth Sealey said in the statement. Deputies used a Taser to subdue McKeachen after he began assaulting officers and tried to take a patrol car, but it seemed to have no effect, Sealey said.

McKeachen began assaulting officers again, was stunned a second time, and then tried to take another patrol vehicle, Sealey said. McKeachen then lost consciousness as deputies continued to subdue him.

Officers performed CPR in attempt to revive McKeachen, Sealey said. He was taken by ambulance to the medical center, where he later died.

The case is under investigation by the State Bureau of Investigation. The deputies, who have not been identified, have been placed on administrative leave pending the investigation, which is protocol for such incidents, Sealey said.

Surveillance video shows McKeachen striking a man in the parking lot on the head with a pipe before entering the store, knocking items off of the shelves and assaulting two customers.

McKeachen had been banned in March from a nearby Shell service station at 97 South Fayetteville Road for panhandling and harassing customers, a store clerk said. He was often seen outside of the store, where he would ask people for money.

He “probably asked St. Peter for $5 bucks,” said Jack Hughes in a post on Facebook. “At one time, he had a good heart. Turned into a plum crazy dude, though.”

“He might not have been all there mentally but other than asking for a cigarette or a drink I don’t know of anyone that he ever hurt or put in danger,” read another post by Marie Brisson. “… Everytime I seen him he asked how my grandmother was doing and gave my boys high-fives.”

McKeachen lived at Green Manor Rest Home at 1165 West Parkton Tobermory Road. A woman who answered the phone at the facility declined to comment on the incident.

There have been at least three other deaths involving stun guns in North Carolina during the past four years.

— Seventeen-year-old Darryl Turner, of Charlotte, died in March 2008 after he was shocked by a police officer. A federal jury found the gun manufacturer at fault and awarded Turner’s family $4.3 million.

— Michael Evans, 56, died last August after he was hit with a stun gun by Fayetteville police. Three officers were cleared of any wrongdoing.

— Last November, 61-year-old Roger Anthony of Halifax County died after he was shocked. A former police officer is facing the charge of involuntary manslaughter.

According to Amnesty International, at least 500 people in the United States have died since 2001 after being shocked with Tasers either during their arrest or while in jail.

Blueeyes 76, you show your ignorance by making comments that you have no personal knowledge of. At no point in time did the Sheriffs Office taze this man in the head. Yes he was tazed twice with no effect on him. Probably because he was wearing multiple layers of clothes. At one time he was dry stunned in the butt. It's people like you that want to Monday morning quarterback every decision that cops make in a split second. It's unfortunate for everyone involved but if you visit WTVD Channel 11 news website, you can view surveillance footage of the inside of the store when this man went haywire. You will also notice that the Rest Home is refusing to cooperate with the SBI in this case.

Good job officers. If anybody wants to say this man was done wrong then he shouldn't have been fighting with officers. If he was to mentally disabled then he should have been in a mental home. He already hit somebody over head with pipe there no telling what he could have done. Then if he would have got away and killed your loved one you would have been asking why didn't cops stop him. So basically just hush. People like you always complain about what cops do no matter the outcome. Cops are put in split second decisions not like they can shoot some ones trigger finger off or what ever crazy thoughts some of you believe. You wont have to worry about it though if you follow the law. Good Job officers.

I just want to commend these deputies. I'm praying for you guys. However, it is sad that someone lost their life.

@ bosomhandchef, next time you need law enforcement, feel free to call a crackhead instead of law enforcement and see how that goes for you. Also if you think Robeson County is that messed up, then pack your belongings and MOVE to another COUNTY!!!

ok i agree with somethings that has been said but the whole truth is not being told the man was shot in the head with the taser and anybody knows thats going to kill someone and yes i feel sorry when cops are killed but that also dont give them the right to shot someone in the head with a taser

The police were doing what they were supposed to do under such circumstances. They can't be held accountable for any wrong doing in this case. What should they have done...said, wait a sec...we need to get a mental background check done before we do our job????.....if there is a problem here, it isn't with the police....maybe it's with a society who doesn't take appropriate care of such individuals......it's all sad, but the police are not to be blamed.....

Insane people should be inside people... Locked away from normal society like they were years ago.

And putting blame on the place where he was housed?... Blame his family, he is their responsibility.

And bosomhandchef, take 911 out of your speedial, and don't ever call the police if you need help.

How can the family be blamed? It is obvious that his mental health was far beyond their abilities to handle. Just like placing a love one in a retirement home. We may not want to do it, but because of an inability to care for loved ones we have no other choice. Or maybe you have never had to place a loved one into care, but it definetly happens. Investigation into the home is needed. Look at the guy in Aurora his family allowed him to walk around, not locked up in a facility. Or is he really mentally challenged. Some people committ crimes and people say "What caused him to do that? Others commit crimes and are immediately considered monsters.

This is a sad situation. Anytime someone loses their life it's sad. However, after the past two weeks with two different officers killed in NC while responding to calls, should our deputies take a chance. No! This man disorderly and I feel the deputies had no other choice. He had already assaulted three other people and than assaulted the deputies.

Here we go again, people putting their input into something they have no knowledge of. The taser is considered a less than lethal weapon meaning it was not the deputies intent to kill the guy when he tazed him. Lets not forget ol boy got tazed because he failed to comply with the officers commands to stop. And for those that said that Scooby never hurt anybody, why dont you ask the guy who was struck in the back with a 2×4 or the woman who he knocked out in the store. This fuy was obviously on drugs and im confident that will be the main contributer to his death. Im praying for you Robeson County because God sure knows most of the general public doesn't.

Sad that someone had to die, but......if the victim could have got his hands on one of the deputies' sidearms, he probably would have used it to kill one of them, or if he were successful in carjacking the patrol car, an innocent, law-abiding citizen may have been harmed, not someone who goes around striking people in the head with a metal pipe...bottom line is this...if the victim would have shot and killed a deputy, people would not be questioning his mental status...only suggesting that he himself should die for committing such an act...if anyone knows about this, it is us in Robeson County, as that thought has crossed many of our minds over the last week and a half. The use of the taser showed restraint, and respect for life, as it was not intended to kill, only to subdue. I commend the deputies on scene, and hope that they can return to work without negative psychological effects from this event.

what is the difference in cops and deputies killing the citizens in wrong doing and citizens killing cops and deputies in wrong doing? What makes one better than the other? Nothing will be done to the deputies, this is Robeson County, the largest messed up county in NC.

The guy hit someone over the head with a pipe...assaulted 2 customers...assaulted officers...tried to steal the officer's vehicles...I hope nothing is done to the officers.

What kind of idiotic comment was this? How can you make such a comment and comparison? An officer is in the public defending others. He or she is not out there causing a disturbance and waiting for someone to arrive so they can ambush them! You don't know these officers... They have no criminal records... They are not in possession of illegal weapons, and they are not seeking innocent people to harm. If they wanted to kill this guy... They would shot him! they used the Use of Force Continuum.... They used their presence, verbal commands, hands on... Then the taser. They did what they had to do... They did set out with the intention to cause harm when they woke up.. Unlike most criminals that go looking trouble or for their victim. It's not that any death should be labeled as RIGHT .... It is the question the actions being justified. I don't wish it on you or anyone... But what if he would have got away in the car and hit you head on causing your death or paralysis? What if would have hit your child.. Then you would have been contacting a lawyer to sue the officers and everyone else ... Claiming they did not do enough to prevent his escape. Maybe he should have struck you in the head with a pipe and possibly cause brain damage... It's not that this county is the problem... It's people such as you which he lack the intelligence to interpret the difference of a criminal actions and justifiable/an Officers action! Within 2 weeks WE (law enforcement haveofficers) have lost two officers during the line of duty... Does that not show the risk that WE take... While people such as you ride by these same individuals without a care... Knowing that with one phone call WE will be on the way. Until you have walked in OUR shoes and made a decision in a few seconds (that will reviewed and dissected by others for weeks)... Don't judge US!!! Just enjoy the comforts of sitting in your house on Sundays and holiday with the ability to call 911.

Happy 236th
Thousands of people were dazzled by the fireworks display at the annual Lumberton Family Fourth celebration at the Lumberton High School football stadium on Tuesday. Many watched the display from parking lots and sidewalks around town and from their own front yards. Before the show, attendees were treated to a performance by the Carolina Breakers, and a stunt by the Army Rangers, who parachuted onto the football field.

As I read this article then all these comments. I AM DISCUSTED...How dare ANY of you!!!! My brother was a great guy, no one was in the car with him, you didn't offer to drive him nor ride, yet choose to come on here & talk about him in a negative fashion is TOTAL DISRESPECT to all his FAMILY. This story was not about my brother yet about a dealership that was ran into & that is the story the Newspaper has chosen to run. They have that right. But for those of you that feel my brother killed himself? Be for real, if you know Lumberton you know there was NO WAY my brother was doing 90mph hence why there is an investigation. Did my brother like to drink, drive fast on a race track, & have a good time? ABSOLUTLY!!!! & many of you partied with him, then come on here & talk about him. If you have NOTHING positive to say about him KEEP YOUR DARN MOUTH SHUT!!!!! You did not lose a father, son, brother or uncle in this so keep your opinions respectful whether you mean it or not out of RESPECT for my brother, PATRICK LYNN MORGAN!!!!!
