LUMBERTON —Robeson County Manager Ricky Harris has named former interim Assistant County Manager Charles Britt to the newly created position of general services manager. The position was recently created by the county commissioners to take away the need for the hiring of a second assistant county manager.
“This position will be a great help to me,” Harris said. “The administration is now set.”
Britt, a county employee for the past 28 years, served as the county’s fire marshal and director of Emergency Services before becoming the county’s interim assistant manager in June 2011 following the departure of Rod Jenkins, who resigned to become deputy director of Human Services for the Cumberland County Health Department.
As general services manager, Britt will assume many of the administrative oversight responsibilities he has held as interim assistant county manager, Harris said. He will oversee: code enforcement; permitting and inspections; emergency medical services; communications; jail health; emergency management and fire marshal; and the county’s offenders resource center.
Harris said that new position was created by “restructuring” the county’s current personnel chart. The position was not advertised.
Harris said that the general services manager is a Grade 88 position on the county’s salary scale, which starts at $70,000. Based on his years with the county, Britt will be making about $80,000 a year, Harris said.
Britt said that two of the projects he has been assigned to work on immediately include relocating the county’s Board of Elections to a new building, and assisting in the county’s efforts to develop plans for building a new county jail.
The commissioners earlier this month approved the hiring of Jason J. King, a resident of Lumberton, as an assistant manager. The county in the past has had two assistant managers, but there has been only one since Harris became the county’s interim manager in November 2010. Harris was named permanent county manager in June.
