LUMBERTON — Three long-time employees with the Robeson County Sheriff’s Office have been promoted, according to Randall Graham, a spokesperson for the 150-member department.
Maj. Randy McGirt, who has been with the department for 15 years, now holds the position of chief deputy. McGirt began his career with the Pembroke Police Department in 1995 and was employed as a road deputy at the Sheriff’s Office in 1998. McGirt worked his way through the ranks as a detective in the Major Crimes Division, detective sergeant, first sergeant and was appointed as chief of operations in 2007. McGirt is also chief of the Smith’s Volunteer Fire Department near Maxton.
Maj. Howard Branch, an Orrum native, was promoted to chief of operations, where he will supervise deputies and bailiffs who work in the Warrant Division, Domestic Violence Unit and courthouse security. Branch began his career in law enforcement 20 years ago as a jailer and later worked as a road deputy and juvenile detective. Branch was the supervisor in the Juvenile Division before he was promoted to chief of detectives in 2007.
Maj. Anthony Thompson, a 28-year veteran with the Sheriff’s Office, was promoted to chief of detectives, where he will the supervise major crime division and detectives. Thompson, who began his career in law enforcement as a uniform deputy, was promoted to detective in 1991 and attained the rank of detective sergeant in 1995. Thompson was promoted to the rank of lieutenant in 2005 and was promoted to captain of the Major Crimes Division in 2011.
