RED SPRINGS — Steven C. Hunt has been named CEO of Lumbee River Electric Membership Corporation, which provided electricity for customers in Robeson and three nearby counties.

“This has been a very thoughtful process that the board has gone through to ensure we had the right person to lead Lumbee River EMC into the future,” Roger Oxendine, chairman of the LREMC board of directors, said in a statement. “We had a very good candidate pool to choose from which made the job difficult. This is a good problem to have.

“Mr. Hunt’s experience in leading organizations at the highest levels will be a benefit to Lumbee River EMC.”

Hunt’s most recent position was operations manager with Campbell Soup in Maxton. Before that, he worked for eight years as plant manager for Tredegar Film Products in Red Springs.

Hunt has also worked at Unilever HPC and Alamac Knits, where he held various management positions. Before his corporate experience, Hunt was a captain in the U.S. Air Force.

Hunt grew up in the Fairmont area and now lives in Pembroke. He earned a B.S. in chemistry from The University of North Carolina at Pembroke.

The Robesonian was unable to reach Hunt for a comment.

In February, he was nominated by Lumbee Tribal Chairman Paul Brooks for the tribal administrator’s position. He did not get enough votes from the 21-member Tribal Council to get the position.

Hunt replaces Randall Jones, who held the CEO position for about two and a half years before leaving about 10 months ago, according to company spokesman Walter White. Perry Cummings, chief operating officer and vice president of engineering and operations for LREMC, has been interim CEO since Jones left.

LREMC serves about 50,000 customers in Robeson, Hoke, Cumberland and Scotland counties. It employs about 110 people, White said.

I wish him all the best as a human being and American and look forward to the day when the Lumbee Indian claim is downplayed and the African heritage, yes.. African American heritage is embraced and cherished from the looks of him as much or more than any fractional Indian heritage claim even if it doesn't come with a Casino or benefits... we all can be proud of Mr.Steven Hunts achievement as CEO.Lets give this brother a chance at it.Its time for the Lumbee to come out and come clean.

No thanks Ross is wrong, I think we all know the answer.

Who is "we"? You are assuming you speak for all others.

You are assuming all others think the same as you.

If 2 people think the same, one isn't needed....

Question for Ross, if the hire were white would you have made the same comments?

I disagree with the premiss of your question.

Look that word up and reword your question and I'll answer you.

PSA: MAKE THIS ORGANIZATION EEOC COMPLIANT AND HIRE THE BEST QUALIFIED FOR THE JOB.

There should be a blind application process. Everything about the person on paper, except name, race, gender, and religion. Then pick and choose the one who would BE BEST for the job....simple.

It would be interesting to know the backgrounds of the other applicants.

This is obviously a political hire and I would not feel safe if I were Hunt.

I'm sure that there were qualified employees to choose from to fill this role.

Hunt did not make the Tredegar business viable so why would he be hired to lead this organization?

Whoever said that people from the Lumbee Tribe could not work together? It is obvious that some of the smarter ones are working together even if the Tribal Council can’t work for the good of the Tribe. Looks like two of the candidates for Lumbee Tribal Administrator worked together and filled a position on one of the larger companies in the county that supply services to 47,000 customers. Good people will always have a job somewhere. Hopefully the Tribal Council will get their heads on straight and fill that Administrator position with a qualified person when the chairman puts another one in front of them instead of rejecting them because they can’t control them. Well at least they are saving the salary of that position because it is not filled.

Happy 236th
Thousands of people were dazzled by the fireworks display at the annual Lumberton Family Fourth celebration at the Lumberton High School football stadium on Tuesday. Many watched the display from parking lots and sidewalks around town and from their own front yards. Before the show, attendees were treated to a performance by the Carolina Breakers, and a stunt by the Army Rangers, who parachuted onto the football field.

In regards to FULL Federal Recognition for the Lumbee tribe, I believe we ARE long overdue! To my fellow Lums: If you have a problem with the tribal government, get involved! Not ALL Lums are greedy, and not all Tribal Council members are corrupt. You must trust your decisions & have faith that the people YOU elect are the right individuals to get the job done in an ethical fashion. If not, then run for it yourself & make a change!! Last but not least, to the "individuals" who wish to REMAIN ignorant to the Lumbee culture & history: Just remember that your public ignorance is more damaging than greed, lies, and any other problem combined. I suppose you still believe that Christopher Columbus discovered America and the moon is really made of cheese... How silly of you to promote discrimination in this day and age.

So Woods & Cummings wrote your department a PERSONAL check? Otherwise I believe that money came from the taxpayers of Robeson County and NOT Woods and Cummings. You should be thanking the taxpayers.

Robeson County pays enough taxes that our agencies should not depend on the commissioners for handouts. Get real when a real budget is put together to keep the commissioners from taking our tax dollars to by votes then we won't settle for the slithering around saying here is a little donation. IT IS OUR MONEY THEY ARE HANDING OUT. In 24yrs what has he done for our economy, education, and crimerate. OH 100 out of 100. We can stop there. It gets worse. I pray Faline blows him back to the big house where he resides. JUST SAY NO TO BUYING VOTES. Wake up RESCUEBOY. He gave you your own money back!!!!!
