A couple of junkers
ST. PAULS — Tino and Carole Ferro’s St. Pauls home is a work of art. A mix of components old and new; man-made and natural; newly-painted and long-rusted; found and recycled, form the wooden-plank-covered home and its matching workshop that come into view after a short drive down a dirt road. The structure is a habitable version of the couple’s creations — a style to which if Tino had to put a name, he would call “impressionist, except in t...

If walls could talk
LUMBERTON — At the end of Caldwell Street sits a yellow and white Victorian home, painted over from the pale ochre and brown that first colored its exterior 108 years ago. Until recently, its walls have known the name of only one family — the same that gives the street its name. Caldwell Street is just a short stretch of pavement covering only a couple of blocks, but at its end, sits the beginning of a story. Neill A. Thompson III cal...

Living in the past
LUMBERTON — Yellowing pages of century-old copies of The Robesonian tell of a flourishing cultural and political landscape. “As goes Robeson County,” says a 1912 issue, “so goes the state.” But Blake Tyner already knew that. The St. Pauls native knows much of the history that has sunken into the swamps and flowed into the Lumber River to raise up Robeson’s farmland. His voice, like the distant train horn passing through town, calls atte...

It takes a community to organize an event
Over the past year, I’ve had the honor of writing about a diverse group of authors who will be participating in Book ‘Em North Carolina on Feb. 23 at Robeson Community College. Last year’s event brought in more than 2,000 attendees and raised $9,000 for Robeson County literacy campaigns. More than half of the attendees came from outside the county. The success of Book ‘Em North Carolina depends upon community support. Civic groups, business...
