The Pastime and Riverside theaters: ‘B’ Movies and Serials
Although the United States was mired in the Great Depression during the 1930s, motion picture theaters were being built and opened for business. Service and Sacrifice
SADDLETREE — Twenty-seven-year-old Edwin Canady traveled the world as a motor machinist’s mate in the U.S. Navy during World War II — but was never able to return to his home in Saddletree. He received a Purple Heart after he died when the submarine he was aboard, the USS Flier, was sunk by a mine near Mantangule Island in 1944. His discharge papers declared him missing in action or buried at sea. Canady’s photo — depicting a fair-skinned...

Pecan trees are a symbol of North Carolina
The pecan tree is a true symbol of Southeast North Carolina. Not too long ago, pecans were grown as part of a means of survival. Today, many enjoy the extra income and aesthetic quality they bring to a property. Pecans are a long-term commitment, with many people planting in hopes their children will one day benefit. Others have inherited orchards that are half a century old, and are only now trying to figure out how to care for the trees. No...

Bumpy road to wedding bliss
My first wedding is over. And yes, I plan to do it again. I recently had my first gig as a bridesmaid — a nomination that all at once made me feel loved and severely stressed out. Maggie, whom I met in college and who now lives in Eau Claire, Wis., finally tied the knot with long-time boyfriend Michael. And she wanted me to be one of her bridesmaids, along with my best friend Lesley and a whole bunch of folks I met the day before the nu...

He gathered together other community leaders to correct that problem. They decided that the goals of the Boys and Girls Clubs of America to provide a safe place to learn and grow, o...
