Boys, Girls Club gets Levee money
Staff report LUMBERTON — The Chevy to the Levee is held in the spring each year, but its benefits continue all year long. Representatives from Lumberton Chevrolet and the Robeson Road Runners, the sponsors of the Chevy to the Levee, recently presented the proceeds from the event — $10,000 — to the Boys and Girls Club of Lumberton/Robeson County. “This is a tough economy and the Boys and Girls Club only charges a young child $1 for the...

Pecan trees: A symbol of the South
From the graceful sway of the leaves and branches in the spring to the melt-in-your-mouth taste of pecan pie at Thanksgiving, pecan trees are a true symbol of the South. With Thanksgiving only a few weeks away, pecans are falling all over the county. Many people have pecan trees that have been on their property for years and years. I often get calls this time of year asking for help to encourage production of these fully mature trees. Befor...

One stitch at a time
PEMBROKE — Every time Sarah Howze sits down to quilt, childhood memories rush back with each stitch — as they do for many members of the Lumber River Quilter’s Guild. “Everybody that went there they can remember picking up scraps off their floor when their mother was cutting out stuff and throwing it on the floor,” Howze said. “We’d just gather them up and finger stitch them together. It was just something we learned from our ancestors.” ...

Miracle march
FAYETTEVILLE — Jackson Brooks is a vibrant and energetic 4-year-old, something that didn’t seem possible when his life began. Jennifer Brooks delivered Jackson just 25 weeks into her pregnancy — a full three months short of full term. Entering the world at just 2 pounds, 1 ounce, Jackson spent the first two months of his life hooked to monitors inside a hospital. “We really feel like it’s a way that God provided for use through work of th...

Reasons to join 4-H are endless
Many people have heard of 4-H, but many are not sure what it is. Often cows and cooking are what people think of when they think of 4-H, and in our beginnings, in 1902, that was a good definition. However, now we are so much more, offering programs to all youths between the ages of 5 and 19. Many ask why they should join 4-H. The reasons to join 4-H are nearly endless. The 4-H program is a great educational youth program and part of North C...

Flying high
LUMBERTON — Joey Britt thinks it’s easier to fly a plane while cruising at 13,000 feet than standing with both feet planted on the ground. “In the models, you are standing there looking at it,” Britt said. “ … When you are in a real airplane, you can feel it, you can look out the window to see how high you are, you can look at the gauges and tell what’s going on. You don’t have any gauges in a remote control airplane. It’s all by just looki...
