Last Shots
PEMBROKE — With a solemn sense of purpose, 10 stone-faced current and former soldiers stood at attention in between the gravestones at Lumbee Memorial Gardens on a cool winter day. As Grady Locklear was laid to rest, six members of the Robeson County Honor Guard snapped their rifles to their shoulders and fired three shots into the air in unison as Eddie Matchett quickly and precisely gave commands. The shots rang out across the gray sky and e...

Desks, power tools and drinks mix poorly
Under my gray, hulking, plastic Rubbermaid desk, my hardwood floor was littered with screws of all shapes and sizes, like an oily floor of an automobile mechanic’s shop. A few black plastic pieces on the ground would soon make up an aftermarket keyboard tray. This was my chance to trick out my desk. That’s what I said to myself before I started my latest home-improvement project. My desk had served me well for years, but it needed a 21st centu...

Ahh … spring is here! I had an absolutely wonderful weekend! Saturday morning I went to the Lumberton Youth Baseball Association’s opening ceremony. RICE: The Best Remedy When an Injury Occurs
If you have ever read the waiver you signed when you joined a gym or the fine print on a piece of home exercise equipment, you may have seen the following disclaimer: “Exercise is a potentially harmful activity. Swift Sewing
LUMBERTON — Annie Grace Lowery’s hand that’s holding needle and thread moves toward her chest, then up toward the sky like a disco dancer in slow motion. She adds the finishing touches to a plastic bag holder she is working on by closing up one of the seams with yarn. Another group of crafters tosses a 10-foot-square piece of cloth over supports before adding quilting and a top layer. Members of the Elder Services Heritage Group at the Soaring...
