Tough canvas
RED SPRINGS — A small drawing of Mickey and Minnie Mouse sitting in a canoe hangs in a corner of Terrence Hill’s home in Red Springs — one of nearly 40 pieces lining the walls, but the one that stands out in his heart. His granddaughter, Jamaka Gooding, drew the picture using Terrence’s leather-sculpting technique eight years ago. “I’ve had as much as four grand offered to me for this picture,” Hill said. “I said, no there’s not enough mo...

‘The Hunger Games’: great series books for teens
Hello once again. I hope I am not boring you with my suggestions on series books for all ages. This article will finish that train of thought as we look at what I consider some of the best series books for young adults and teens, which is children about 13 to 18 years old. The first series that I would highly recommend is not for the weak of heart or those who don’t like the pants scared off them. It is the “Monstrumologist” Series by Rick ...

Dreams in flight
PEMBROKE — In two words, Walter Johns’ arms tell the world a story. Tattooed on his biceps, amid musical notes and airplanes, are the words “Flight” and “Committee.” “This is my life,” Johns said, sitting in his make-shift studio in Pembroke, complete with black walls and sound pads. “This is how I plan on feeding my kids one day if I ever have some.” Johns, a junior marketing major at The University of North Carolina at Pembroke, is th...

So what do we do to get them to eat more fruits and vegetables? You make it fun. North Carolina Cooperative Extension, Robeson County Center, has a new and exciting program called 4-H Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program just for youths ages 5 to 19. The ...

Saving Gracie
LUMBERTON — Amy Mercer often stands outside, craning her neck and searching the limbs of the oak tree in her back yard, sweetly talking and clicking her tongue.
