Series books: A great read for all
Some of my favorite types of books to read are series books. These can be books in which the story carries over from book to book or they can star the same characters in different stories. These types of books start for the youngest of ages in picture books to the oldest, young adults, in the Children’s/Teen Section of the library. I will start with the youngest and work my way up. For young readers or non-readers (ages 4 to 8) I would be r...

Robeson County is full of opportunities to buy local
I have noticed lately that more than ever, we are bombarded with negative news about the budget and the state of our economy. County, state, and nationwide, people are hurting as our economy stands still. I have always been a positive person, but the continuous negative news has even gotten me down lately. This job takes me out into the county where I meet lots of people, see lots of things, and have lots of time alone in my car to and from...

Two wheeling
LUMBERTON — In the same position as he would watch a football game, and at the same speed you would drive through a parking lot, Will Parker recently set a world record — on a bicycle. The 17-year-old Lumberton resident completed a 100-mile course to set the first recumbent bicycle record for that distance. As he was still 16, the record is for males under the age of 17. Will is the son of Maria Parker, who has set records on the recum...

Positive interaction makes a world of difference
I have learned a great deal in my working career as both an environmental engineer and a children’s and teen’s librarian. Of those things — the most important — is how to positively interact with people. Not only is it way more pleasant than getting in a shouting match or ugly argument, it generally solves problems quicker and in the right way. It’s all about respecting others’ points of view, listening to what they have to say and giving t...

Can be done
LUMBERTON — Daniel Locklear vividly remembers his mother taking Mason jars filled with vegetables from the pantry to make home-grown dinners for the family each night. Now the Pembroke resident is hoping to incorporate that technique into his own meals, and recently took a canning class at the O.P. Owens Agriculture Center. “My mom canned about all of her life, and I was a farmer, so I spent most of my time in the field,” Locklear said. “...

Perfect plants for your porch
I forgot to water my ferns and my Clemson flag blew off in one of the last bad storms. My front porch looks boring and cookie cutter, just like everyone else’s in the neighborhood. What can I do?? One of the easiest ways to create a welcoming entrance or to spruce up a boring front porch is to add a container planting. Container gardening is an easy, inexpensive, and noncommittal way for people to get a splash of color and drama very quickl...

Time traveler
LUMBERTON — Dick Taylor’s eyes light up as he cranks up a red 1936 Auburn Super-Charger replica sitting in a garage on Fourth Street. Taylor shows off the horn, which gives the driver a choice of sounds – a fanfare, short tunes, or any combination of beeps and honks — and each loudly echos off the walls of the building. The car, built by a friend, is one of about 35 collector cars Taylor owns. It is part of a passion that has spanned more...
