Kiwanis celebrates its 85th anniversary
LUMBERTON — The Kiwanis Club of Robeson-Lumberton celebrated the 85th anniversary of the club’s original charter during its weekly lunch meeting on March 4. The original charter was granted on March 6, 1924, after 74 community leaders formed the Kiwanis Club of Lumberton. The club is a community service organization focusing on youths of Robeson County. Ralph Ussery, the chapter’s oldest tenured member, cut the cake commemorating 85 years of ...

Exercise through the flu season
It was the Wednesday before the Rumba on the Lumber, and I still had not signed up to run the 5K You see, I’ve been fighting the crud for the past few weeks and could not decide if I was going to participate in the run. I visited the doctor and got some medicine to help but, truth be told, I’m really bad at racing just for “fun.” I feel I must win, place, or at the very least, post a faster time than the previous year. If you didn’t see me thi...

And the winner is...'Slumdog'
“And the Oscar goes to ... ‘Slumdog Millionaire!”’ What? Haven’t heard of it? Vaguely recall the name? That’s because this film wasn’t playing in Robeson County at the same time that the rest of the world was raving about it. But, after winning 2008’s coveted Oscar, ‘tis finally here. And like those annoying optimists say — better late than never! “Slumdog” immediately grabs you. You’ll probably squint your eyes in an effort to shield the unpl...

Dancers awaken
Staff report PEMBROKE — Carabosse, an evil fairy, casts a spell on a baby princess, who will die on her 16th birthday. The Lilac Fairy, a good fairy, gives her a chance at life, who declares the princess will only sleep until she is awakened by the kiss of a prince. Does this story sound familiar? That’s because it is. “The Sleeping Beauty” is a classic fairy tale that will be told as a ballet at GPAC on Tuesday by the Russian National Ballet...

Rumba on the Lumber is this weekend - bring running shoes
This week I thought I would take a page out of Bob Fisher’s playbook and write about a several topics for my article, and what better topic to start with than Bob Fisher himself? For those who know — or know of — Bob, you are aware that after nearly 30 years of service to the Robeson County Public Library, he retired. I would not be able to do him justice by trying to sum up all that Bob has meant to our county so I will simply say thank you, ...

The '60s came to town and left in a haze
The ’60s were back and Lumberton was swinging this weekend. “Remember the ’60s” returned to the Carolina Civic Center, where it had skipped a few beats while the center was being renovated. I’m sure the show brought back memories for a lot of people who had seen the show before in the same venue. But, judging by the age of most of the audience members, most of them wouldn’t know what the ’60s looked like or sounded like if it sent them a video...

Leapers: It's your day ... or is it?
Happy birthday, leapers. For those who may not know what a "leaper" is, they are the folks who figuratively age four times slower than the rest of us. That's because they are born on Feb. 29, which would be today if it weren’t March 1, but only comes around once every four years. As you can imagine, that creates a bit of a conundrum — such as, when to celebrate on non-leap years. According to a Google search, this situation affects about 187,0...

Let's map the Rumba course
Flat and fast are adjectives the Robeson Road Runners use to describe the course for the 2009 version of the Rumba on the Lumber LRA 5K race. This bodes well for those of us commonly described as slow, weak and more interested in chili than a timing chip. Over the years, the race course that winds through scenic downtown Lumberton has attracted elite runners and novices as well. That is the lure. Not unlike the Marine Corps Marathon in Washing...

Timpe: Orchestra comes up big at the Civic Center
The Carolina Civic Center’s stage was bursting at the seems Friday night when the Fayetteville Orchestra took the stage. When the first violinist walked out to the head of the orchestra to lead the tuning, he walked through a narrow aisle between the violas. All I could think about was a scene from the movie “Airplane!” The stewardess asks to borrow a nun’s guitar to sing to the sick child and hits every passenger on the head on the way up to ...
