County government’s failures on Animal Control require state fix
To the Editor, I wish to respond to county Commissioner David Edge’s comment regarding the “insane” idea of animals in air-cooled boxes mandated by the state’s Department of Agriculture. Failure of the county commissioners to adopt standards of humane treatment for animals and their welfare have made it necessary for the state’s intervention. When “local” government bodies fail on important issues of the people, then it is necessary for big...

Commissoner’s comment about animals suggests don’t care attitude
To the Editor, County Commissioner David Edge must be living in the Dark Ages or hiding under a rock! Obviously he has been MIA during the many years some of us have worked diligently to make certain our animals are treated in the manner they deserve. I doubt he would like to be driving around in a vehicle without air conditioning and I doubt he would like to be taken to his death smothering in the back of a truck so hot he couldn’t breat...

Lumberton residents need to pitch in with recycling program
To the Editor, Our City Council and our Public Works Department are to be commended for their recent action to bring curbside recycling to Lumberton. My family has been faithful in separating and taking recyclable materials to the local collection point directly behind the Lumberton Rescue Station since its inception there, and for many years at the former recycling site on Bailey Road. If we are to be good stewards of our environment, we...

The Robesonian applauded for its tribute to Dalton Brooks
To the Editor, I want to thank The Robesonian in a deeply heartfelt way for writing the editorial on Dr. Dalton Brooks entitled “Lost Leader” that was published on Jan. 18. Two days of listening to persons at both the wake and the funeral for Dr. Brooks confirmed my sense of the special quality of Dalton’s spirit, life, and contribution. He lived in love and stepped forward to serve our Robeson County community when he was asked by others...

Two bills pending in Congress
threaten our rights as citizens

To the Editor, I want to get the word out about two bills that are being argued in Congress. These two bills have to do with the Internet and our freedoms as we know them now. In fact, if they pass, they will be infringing upon parts of our First Amendment Freedom of Speech. If that falls, just how much longer before other of our rights as citizens of this great nation will fall? The two bills are called SOPA and PIPA. Community sites exi...

Lumbee Tribe does poor job or informing public on services
To the Editor, The policies and practices of the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina make it difficult for tribal members to receive services. Additionally, quality communication to tribal members is not a priority of the LTNC. In order to receive the most basic information about available services, tribal members must take off work (possibly endangering their employment), secure child, adult or elder care (incurring costs) and locate transpor...

Community-wide effort ensures
local students are eating well

To the Editor, Communities In Schools of Robeson County partnered with Southeastern Regional Medical Center in August on BakPak Pals, packs of kid friendly, nutritious food for students who were likely to go with little or no food over the weekend. We began our project with 75 students in three local elementary schools and have increased that number to 87. Hospice House serves as the location for preparing the packs of food. SRMC is able ...

Find time to brighten a day by visiting a nursing home
To the Editor, As a speech/language pathologist for 20 years, I have had the privilege of spending long periods of time with the geriatric population. Although I have been told by some that lengthy visits with “old people” would not be a privilege, I disagree. As the days of winter grow shorter and daylight seems less available to all of us, I implore you to reconsider that attitude. Through the eyes of a person who only sees the sun out ...

Lumbee people need to till gardens, remove the weeds
To the Editor, During 2011 I asked that the Lumbee Housing Complex to plant a garden with our traditional crops of tobacco, corn, beans, peas, collards, cabbage, sweet potatoes, potatoes and whatever else makes a great bowl of homemade soup. Crops grown are to be given to the most at-risk populations of our community. I have asked boys and girls clubs and elder associations to tend these gardens. I want more Lumbee people to become master...

Lumbees need recogniton lobbyist with tribe’s best interest at heart
To the Editor, After the tribe’s federal recognition efforts came so close last year, I’m sure most of us are wondering is this the year we get it? Or maybe we’re thinking, what will it take to see full federal recognition come our way? While the tribe clearly appreciates the significance and importance full federal recognition would bring to the tribe and this region, I suspect the Lumbee people are growing eager to learn what exactly th...

Out-of-district transfers cause
crowding problem at Tanglewood

To the Editor, As president of the Tanglewood Elementary School PTA, I have the unique opportunity to witness the wonderful job our faculty and staff does in educating our children. Unfortunately, the school board and public school administration are hindering our ability to provide an adequate educational environment. Tanglewood presently has four kindergarten classes with an average class size of 25 students. This average exceeds the st...

Next Russian president is
actually hidden in plain view

To the Editor, No alternative to Putin? Edgar Allen Poe wrote “The Purloined Letter,” in which a stolen letter was hidden in such an obvious place — in plain view — that only one man noticed this letter. To cut to the chase: The only obvious candidate to oppose V.V. Putin in March 2012’s Russian presidential election is the incumbent: Dmitry Anatolyevich Medvedev, date of birth 14 September 1965. Putin can lose, and Medvedev can win. ...

GOP’s assault on voting rights
All eyes are on Iowa this week, as the hodgepodge field of Republican contenders gallivants across that farm state seeking a win, or at least “momentum,” in the campaign for the party’s presidential nomination. But behind the scenes, a battle is being waged by Republicans — not against each other, but against American voters. Across the country, state legislatures and governors are pushing laws that seek to restrict access to the voting booth...

Puppy died because county officials didn’t respond when they were called
To the Editor, Today my heart is very heavy and sad. Those of you who personally know me are aware that I have a deep love and care for animals. My mother called me a few weeks ago and told me that her neighbor was abusing and neglecting their 6-month-old golden retriever. She called the Humane Society. They told her to call Animal Control. Animal Control told her it was the Sheriff Department’s responsibility, so I called them. They said...

Perdue ignores the people on death penalty, Voter ID
To the Editor, Gov. Beverly Perdue is out of touch with North Carolinians. Perdue vetoes and rejects the “super majority” of North Carolinas’ district attorneys’ findings and denies 64 percent of N.C. citizens’ who support the death penalty as required by law. The Racial Justice Act of year 2009 has made it all but impossible for N.C. courts to enforce death penalty laws. Perdue and many other members of the Democrat Party support the N...
