Supporting Humane Society would pay off for commissioners To the Editor,
After the Robeson County Humane Society asked for funding at the last county commissioners’ meeting, The Robesonian reported that County Attorney Hal Kinlaw said discretionary funds were meant for “individual districts and not a central area (such as Lumberton).”
Homeless animals wander the streets and highways of each of the commissioners’ districts. Unchecked animal breeding affects all districts. Nor are the society’s se...
Commissioners should cut benefits, fund animal control To the Editor,
The tragic death of a local woman providing care for rescued animals brings to the forefront, once again, the need for more animal control measures. The county commissioners failure to adopt a “leash law” enable irresponsible pet owners in this county, while the burden of animal welfare is passed along to rescue groups and the Humane Society.
It is my discontent for county leaders who bemoan requesst for more animal funding...
Candidate says members of Tribal Council can’t count To the Editor,
As a candidate for the Lumbee Tribal Council District District 9, which is Saddletree, I would like to know how 21 members on the council can you sit there not know where $18 million was? We are not talking about $18 or even $1,800, but $18 million.
It seems to me the the council was too busy going on trips — vacations — when they should had been home looking after the tribal members. Pearlean Revels, the council speaker, t...
President is pushing the country away from God To the Editor,
I wish to comment on the letter by Ms. Evelyn Smith in the Sept. 27 edition of The Robesonian. We are living in difficult times — more difficult than we have in many, many years.
President Obama’s platform was change and we definitely have had that, but it has been a change for the worst. I want the people of this county to think about all the things that are going on now — lying, refusing to allow Christians to have prayer...
Society can’t be fearful of a dissenting opinion To the Editor,
There have been media reports of student, faculty, and other organizations advocating for the removal of one person from the 31-member UNC system committee crafting strategy for the state’s public universities. I would strongly recommend against this strategy.
I have spent my career working with individuals, groups, and organizations trying to build consensus, bridge across ideological boundaries, and encourage respect, dig...
Obama’s policies not working for the nation’s middle class To the Editor,
I am amazed that anyone can think that President Obama really cares about the middle class.
Our national debt is over $16 trillion. Our children and grandchildren will have to pay for this. He says we don’t need to worry short term but we will long term, meaning our children and grandchildren.
We have millions out of work and many thousands who have given up even looking for jobs. Many thousands, if not millions, of middl...
Tribal election next month would violate constitution To the Editor,
The tribal election of the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina scheduled for Nov. 13 will elect a tribal chairman for a three-year term. Also, seven of the 21 Tribal Council positions are up for election. The 21 Tribal Council positions represent 14 tribal districts.
The Lumbee Constitution does not authorize the number of Tribal Council members to differ from the number of districts. In fact the Lumbee Constitution specifically...
It’s time for fresh faces on Board of Commissioners To the Editor,
I attended the county commissioners meeting held Sept. 4 and I was not fooled by Mr. Tom Taylor’s attempt to move toward fiscal reform.
The recommendation to conduct a study is simply a clever ruse designed to lure citizens into complacency on the issue. My observations of the county commissioners’ demeanor and behavior during the meeting revealed they are disillusioned and out of touch with the citizens. Anyone in attendan...
Council’s gaming fees put a lot of people out of work To the Editor,
I can’t understand the Lumberton City Council and its views and outrageous fees on video poker while they have no problem with the state lottery. They imposed a $2,500 fee on each machine and that put a lot of places out of business and probably left approximately 100 people out of work. And people wonder why we are the poorest county in North Carolina.
People are going to gamble and we or I don’t need some idiots telling m...
President Obama will look out for nation’s middle class To the Editor,
The presidential race has become very clear to us. If you are rich, by all means vote for Mitt Romney, as he has your back covered. But if you are like most of us, vote for President Obama, as he truly cares about the middle class and has the vision to continue getting this great country back on track.

Fair brings new shows when it returns on Friday To the Editor,
The Robeson County Fair is almost here, opening this Friday when youngsters will have a half day of school. The Fair Board always advertises the fair as having something for everyone. Well, this year, they are starting the fair experience with the cover of the fair program being a “scratch & sniff” — scratch the program cover and it smells like cotton candy — so dear to my heart. That feature should bring out the kid in all o...
Taylor part of fight to fix 10-year pay problem To the Editor,
What a sweet moment it was when I opened The Robesonian to the editorial page and there they were … more letters addressing the same issue that I feel so concerned about, county commissioners’ compensation.
Although I was somewhat dismayed a couple weeks ago that my research and intent were questioned by the good reverend, the fact remains that the issue here is fixing something that is broken, not how long it has been brok...
Dr. Gerber’s retirement a loss for local residents To the Editor.
I was a resident of Lumberton for 26 years and was there when Dr. Dixon Gerber moved to town with his family and opened his practice of orthopedics.
Our first necessity for Dr. Gerber’s services came when my mother-in-law from Chadbourn fell and broke her hip. He operated on her and was so professional as well as caring with this aging lady — a caring that went far above the call of duty. Our next necessity for Dr. Gerber’s...
Give Republicans a chance at leadership To the Editor,
Robeson County has been run by Democrats for decades and look where it has gotten us. We are the poorest county in the state. We have the highest murder rate in the state. We have a high unemployment rate. Yet people continue voting the same way. Only one of our county commissioners, David Edge, is a Republican.
Our commissioners are the fourth-highest paid in the state and they each have $40,000 per year to spend as they p...
Voters elected the wrong Cummings for commissioner To the Editor,
Recently, The Robesonian looked into the salaries, benefits, retirement and discretionary funds of our commissioners vs. other fellow counties and their commissioners. The facts were astounding. Robeson County is the most impoverished in the state of North Carolina with growing unemployment, while our county commissioners are the highest paid with excellent benefits for their families as well.
This is not the first time thi...
Tribal Council not focusing on constitutional mandates To the Editor,
By tribal law, the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina Tribal Council must recite the preamble to the Lumbee constitution at each meeting. The preamble speaks of a tribal government that promotes education, culture and social and economic well being. The council has been meeting recently to establish the tribal operating budget for 2012-2013.
These meetings have been well attended by Tribal Council members. The fact, however, th...
