Community-wide effort ensures
local students are eating well

To the Editor, Communities In Schools of Robeson County partnered with Southeastern Regional Medical Center in August on BakPak Pals, packs of kid friendly, nutritious food for students who were likely to go with little or no food over the weekend. We began our project with 75 students in three local elementary schools and have increased that number to 87. Hospice House serves as the location for preparing the packs of food. SRMC is able ...

Find time to brighten a day by visiting a nursing home
To the Editor, As a speech/language pathologist for 20 years, I have had the privilege of spending long periods of time with the geriatric population. Although I have been told by some that lengthy visits with “old people” would not be a privilege, I disagree. As the days of winter grow shorter and daylight seems less available to all of us, I implore you to reconsider that attitude. Through the eyes of a person who only sees the sun out ...

Lumbee people need to till gardens, remove the weeds
To the Editor, During 2011 I asked that the Lumbee Housing Complex to plant a garden with our traditional crops of tobacco, corn, beans, peas, collards, cabbage, sweet potatoes, potatoes and whatever else makes a great bowl of homemade soup. Crops grown are to be given to the most at-risk populations of our community. I have asked boys and girls clubs and elder associations to tend these gardens. I want more Lumbee people to become master...

Out-of-district transfers cause
crowding problem at Tanglewood

To the Editor, As president of the Tanglewood Elementary School PTA, I have the unique opportunity to witness the wonderful job our faculty and staff does in educating our children. Unfortunately, the school board and public school administration are hindering our ability to provide an adequate educational environment. Tanglewood presently has four kindergarten classes with an average class size of 25 students. This average exceeds the st...

Lumbees need recogniton lobbyist with tribe’s best interest at heart
To the Editor, After the tribe’s federal recognition efforts came so close last year, I’m sure most of us are wondering is this the year we get it? Or maybe we’re thinking, what will it take to see full federal recognition come our way? While the tribe clearly appreciates the significance and importance full federal recognition would bring to the tribe and this region, I suspect the Lumbee people are growing eager to learn what exactly th...

Puppy died because county officials didn’t respond when they were called
To the Editor, Today my heart is very heavy and sad. Those of you who personally know me are aware that I have a deep love and care for animals. My mother called me a few weeks ago and told me that her neighbor was abusing and neglecting their 6-month-old golden retriever. She called the Humane Society. They told her to call Animal Control. Animal Control told her it was the Sheriff Department’s responsibility, so I called them. They said...

Next Russian president is
actually hidden in plain view

To the Editor, No alternative to Putin? Edgar Allen Poe wrote “The Purloined Letter,” in which a stolen letter was hidden in such an obvious place — in plain view — that only one man noticed this letter. To cut to the chase: The only obvious candidate to oppose V.V. Putin in March 2012’s Russian presidential election is the incumbent: Dmitry Anatolyevich Medvedev, date of birth 14 September 1965. Putin can lose, and Medvedev can win. ...

GOP’s assault on voting rights
All eyes are on Iowa this week, as the hodgepodge field of Republican contenders gallivants across that farm state seeking a win, or at least “momentum,” in the campaign for the party’s presidential nomination. But behind the scenes, a battle is being waged by Republicans — not against each other, but against American voters. Across the country, state legislatures and governors are pushing laws that seek to restrict access to the voting booth...

Mother thankful for help from The Empty Stocking Fund
To the Editor I’m writing this letter in regards to The Empty Stocking Fund. I just want to thank God for laying it upon each and everyone who contributed to the fund. I want to greatly express my appreciation to The Robesonian for God giving you a dream to start the project years ago. I’ve never been in a predicament where I was unable to get my kids Christmas until this year. Although, God made a way for it to happen. That’s what this...

Perdue ignores the people on death penalty, Voter ID
To the Editor, Gov. Beverly Perdue is out of touch with North Carolinians. Perdue vetoes and rejects the “super majority” of North Carolinas’ district attorneys’ findings and denies 64 percent of N.C. citizens’ who support the death penalty as required by law. The Racial Justice Act of year 2009 has made it all but impossible for N.C. courts to enforce death penalty laws. Perdue and many other members of the Democrat Party support the N...

Police pass by, but stranded motorist finds help anyway
To the Editor, I’d like to thank Kim Owens of the Robeson County Public Library along with CSX railroad employee Anthony Cain for getting my truck started after its battery died in the library parking lot. When I suspected a battery problem, Kim procured a soft drink to dissolve the erosion from the terminals, and when that didn’t work, she sought jumper cables and so when the jumper cables failed, she jaunted over to a nearby car lot to ...

Thanks to the angels who helped motorist on Fayetteville Road
To the Editor, Just before Thanksgiving, my son and I were driving on Fayetteville Road. He was stopped at the light there at Wendy’s. We had some plywood on the truck. Had it tied down too, but when he pulled off when the light changed, he looked back and said “Oh no!’ I ask him what was wrong and he said that all the plywood had slipped off the truck. You know what a busy road that is? Well, before we could get out of the truck some guy...

Time for the big dogs to pen some affirming legislation
To the Editor, In the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina government, the Tribal Council is the legislative body expected to legislate to overcome or avoid hurdles in the operation of government and to ensure fair equity and future stability of our three independent branches. Legislation requires understanding issues, writing, editing and passage of laws, ordinances, resolutions and tribal rules and procedures of operation. During 2010 and 201...

Fire departments fail public if they skip on automatic aid
To the Editor, Recently there was a meeting of the Robeson County Fire Chiefs Association, which was created to be a voice of leadership for fire protection in Robeson County. As most everyone knows, fire departments in Robeson County are primarily volunteer. A few departments have a “paid per call” status, and as far as I know only one department is considered “career.” The majority are volunteer. The reason for the meeting was to discus...

Nation can’t afford two more
years of the ‘Washington Follies’

To the Editor, The national debt has grown from $9 trillion in 2007 to $15 trillion in 2011. That is an increase of about $6 trillion in four years, or about $1.5 trillion per year. The collective legislative body of our federal government could not find $1.3 trillion in budget cuts over 10 years. They appointed a super committee, six democrats and six republicans, and charged them with the responsibility of finding $ 1.3 trillion in cuts...
