Police officers’ family members live in fear of possible tragic news
To the Editor, While reading the on-line comments in response to the Lumberton Police Department’s fallen hero, I was appalled. I come from a family of police officers, from my husband, my father, my cousin’s and many friends. Whether it be the Robeson County Sheriff’s Department, the Lumberton Police Department, or the North Carolina Highway Patrol, we are all family. I was sickened when I first heard the news, because it could have been...

Time to let Mike McIntyre know you believe in term limits
To the Editor, Just in case you missed it, Democratic U.S. Congressman Mike McIntyre, who represents Southeastern North Carolina, was one of 17 Democrats who crossed party lines on June 28 when he voted to hold U.S. Attorney General Eric H. Holder in contempt of Congress. It it was the first time in our nation’s history that a congressional contempt citation was issued against a current cabinet member. McIntyre clearly has sacrificed the ...

Husband, wife thankful for great care at Southeastern Regional
To the Editor, I spent half of January and half of February at Southeastern Regional Medical Center. But under the circumstances I could not think of a better place to be. The concern and treatment of the patient is remarkable. They are kind and always pleasant, always ready to help. Starting with those who greet you at the door and then all the way through your stay. The pulmonary team was very efficient, friendly and concerned. Their ...

Man came from God’s touch, not from some primordial ooze
To the Editor, I have got to admit it. I finally have had enough of those people who don’t believe in God. And those who don’t believe in creation. That they would rather believe they came from a virus living in primordial ooze, who eventually crawled up onto land is beyond me. They continue along this line until they became monkeys who climbed down out of the trees. After another million years, they turned into cavemen. Personally, I wou...

Recognition process not broken; give money directly to Lumbees
To the Editor, The American Indian recognition system of our federal government isn’t broken. There are thousands who have Lumbee cards who do not want this tribal government to get their hands on the millions of dollars that federal recognition of the Lumbee tribe would bring. This would only increase the debt that our government is already in. It would duplicate services which are already provided. Truly, there was a chance once for a per...

Pembroke event highlighting fatherhood was huge success
To the Editor, I am writing to share some really good news. On June 16, nearly 500 people gathered at the Pembroke Recreation Complex to celebrate fathers as “heroes of the home” at the Fatherhood Rally 2012. The theme was “Let’s Make Us Whole”. The event was a community collaborative effort hosted by the Native American Interfaith Ministries/Healing Lodge and co-hosted by the UNC Pembroke Healthy Start CORPS. The planning committee would...

Police need help from public in their fight against crime
To the Editor, This letter is in response to Geraldine Lowry’s letter about crime in Lumberton. Motels and hotels in Lumberton do see a high number of thefts due to their easy access to main roads and light security, but we need to place more blame on the patrons then on the police. Thieves are like cockroaches; if you give them darkness and a prize they will come out to get it. Most of the time these travelers who stay at our hotels le...

How can an emergency room not have a doctor working?
To the Editor, My sister-in-law went to the emergency room recently at Southeastern Regional Medical Center and was told that there was no ER doctor and that they had no idea how long it would be before she could be seen. One of the waiting-room patients had been there since 10:30 the previous night. Now mind you my sister had just suffered a seizure and was complaining of a burning sensation in her stomach and vomiting. They told her she...

Lumbee people can hold Tribal Council accountable
To the Editor, Lumbee people have recently spoken up and demonstrated the power we possess in our tribal government. The Tribal Council recently attempted to rob our veterans of funding to purchase a vehicle to transport our nation’s veterans. As with their military service, Lumbee veterans fought for what was right and won. The Tribal Council goofed again when they approved a budget eliminating funding for Veterans Services and the Boys & ...

Join Guardian ad Litem and help child through court system
To the Editor, Right now, there are abused and neglected children who are involved with juvenile court through no fault of their own. These children deserve to know that there is a caring adult who will provide a voice for them in court. Our program trains community persons to provide that voice for our children. There will be an interest meeting on July 16 at 5:30 p.m. in the Guardian ad Litem office located at 108 W. Eighth St. So many ...

Too many thefts, too much vandalism, too few arrests
To the Editor, Thefts from homeowners and businesses are on the rise but the arrests of the criminals are declining. I read in the paper this past week where thousands of dollars worth of tools were stolen from vehicle sparked at motels in Lumberton. Everytime I pass by these motels I feel like putting up sign saying “Do not stay here; you will be ripped off or your vehicle vandalized.” Thefts are also on the rise for homeowners. I have...

County manager story provided icing, but not the cake’s ingredients
To the Editor, I read the profile on the new county manager, Mr. Ricky Harris, written by Mr. Bob Shiles. I am wondering if Mr. Shiles was only looking at the icing on the cake. He surely missed out on the ingredients used to make the cake. Normally, if someone other than the person is doing the mixing, then the person claiming the results is a fraud. I believe reporting any issues or newsworthy comments should be for the best interest of...

Commissioners ignore people’s will by approving permit to mine sand
To the Editor, On Monday, county Commissioners Noah Woods, Tom Taylor, Hubert Sealey, David Edge, Jerry Stephens, Roger Oxendine and District 5 Commissioner Raymond Cummings unanimously granted a conditional-use permit to mine sand in the Philadelphus Agricultural/Residential community. Our elected officials failed to apply basic democratic principles — governance by the people. It was readily apparent at the meeting that the citizens of ...

Vonta Leach group did great job with football-cheer camp
To the Editor, I was very pleased at the organization of the 2012 Summer Football/Cheer camp sponsored by Vonta Leach organization. They did an outstanding job. Thank you so much for all those that gave their time or donations. I have worked with teens for more than 10 years and I honor those who have achieved in professional venues of life and share those experiences with our future youth who may have not otherwise have that opportunity....

Commissioners need to reject sand mine for Philadelphus area
To the Editor, As a former resident of the Philadelphus area, I was absolutely appalled to read that the Robeson County Planning Board has approved a conditional-use permit that will allow a sand mining operation there. The Planning Board members have essentially signed the death warrant for that lovely and peaceful rural community with a scenic old millpond and a historic Presbyterian church that is so architecturally significant it appear...

State repays family’s service by yanking contract after a death
To the Editor, The headline in the June 24 edition of The Robesonian concerning the DMV Office was shocking. It shows how callous our government can be and how dumb some of their decisions are. For more than 30 years the Beasley family has served North Carolina and the public. Helen Beasley has served North Carolina, Robeson County, Lumberton and outlying areas for 30 years and after Helen’s death the way DMV thanks the family is by kicki...
