Scary situation is a reminder not to let dogs roam free
To the Editor, On Wednesday, May 23, after hearing for much of the day several dogs barking in the woods that run behind an office building on Fayetteville Road and in front of the townhouses in Walnut Cove, we heard the barking getting louder and becoming more frantic. It was discovered that four or five large dogs were in the water — there is a small lake on the property — tearing an animal, perhaps another dog or small deer, to pieces. W...

Locklear’s lawsuits, letters hurt efforts to win federal recognition
To the Editor, An opinion is like a mouth, everyone has one. That is how I feel about Eric Locklear and his letters to the editor regarding the Lumbee Tribal Government. His thoughts and opinions are truly that of his own. If the members of the Lumbee Tribe actually believed everything he said he would have won the election last year for the Lumbee Tribal Council and he would be sitting on there now. I can see where some of his thoughts a...

Widow grateful for outpouring of support from her neighbors
To the Editor, I had the pleasure of being married to the most wonderful man for 29 years. He has been my husband, soul mate and most of all my best friend plus a great father. If you have ever been through The Oaks during the Halloween or Christmas season you have probably seen the wonderful and magical decorations in our yard. He spent so many days and always worked so hard getting it just right to make it special. He always said it was f...

Politicians blind to problems to promote blissful ignorance
To the Editor, While reading a piece on China’s compounding woes I was struck by how maniacal their preoccupation was with fiscal wellness as the measuring stick of good government. This evoked a strong personal response as I naturally thought of the casualties of such linear thought. As I switched to more local fare this passion swelled again as I read how local incumbents ran on the county’s good financial footing. This is a county that...

Letters to the Editor
The founders’ intent regarding church and state has been lost To the Editor, I see many today nationwide debating the wall of separation between church and state. Amendment 1 of the Bill of Rights begins as such, “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion or prohibiting the free exercise thereof or abridging the freedom of speech,” etc. This is very clear. Government cannot tell you how to serve God nor hinder you in ...

East Lumberton landlords need to be careful who they rent to
To the Editor, The residents of East Lumberton are having problems with rental properties in East Lumberton. We cannot and will not have people afraid to be in their own yards or afraid to sit on their own porches because of people who are renting property in our neighborhoods. We have made the decision to continue living in East Lumberton. Some of you landlords decided to move elsewhere, either in another section of the city or another c...

Reports that Republicans cut state money to schools are false
To the Editor, Reports that the 2011-12 school year’s budget for the Public Schools of Robeson County was slashed by Republicans in the General Assembly are not true. With the state facing a $2.8 billion deficit, all departments had to take a cut. Although state funding for public schools across North Carolina was cut approximately 5 percent, the Public Schools of Robeson County was allocated more money, not less, by the General Assembly. ...

Fabrications couldn’t keep state from approving Amendment One
To the Editor, When the Mississippi primary was held, the folks there had a chance to vote on what was called “The Heartbeat Bill.” It was to protect little babies in the womb. Mississippians were bombarded with calls and ads threatening loss of contraception rights and the like, fabrications, falsehoods and flat-out lies. The bill was browbeaten down. Fast forward to May 8 in North Carolina and and Amendment One, the Marriage Amendment, ...

Sheriff’s Office, fair committee did great job at Relay for Life
To the Editor, As the team captain for Zion Hill 41, I just want to thank Sheriff Kenneth Sealey and his staff for a wonderful job during Relay for Life. His deputies, especially Benji Wagner, kept a check on all of us and we felt safe. The Relay was really great and we want to thank the member of the fair committee for everything they did for the event. Thank you and God bless you all. Betsy Soesbee Lumberton

Gays aren’t bad people, they are under affliction of Satan
To the Editor, It is not hard to understand what Mr. Rozier said about gays in his letter published May 10. But, I think we are going at the problem the wrong way. First, gays are not bad people. They are just trying to live and be part of society while under the affliction Satan has put on them. They are innocent. Satan is the guilty one. I call on Robeson County churches to set up recovery stations. Invite gays and straight people i...

Supporting Amendment One isn’t bigotry; it’s about God’s holy word
To the Editor, I can’t believe Luke Britt in his letter to the editor had the nerve to call people who supported Amendment One bigots. He reads a few verses in The Book of Mark about love. The amendment had nothing about love in it. He needs to read the Bible. God made man, and woman. It’s not that we don’t love everybody. The life that they choose is their life, but don’t try and make others agree with it. And don’t call people names tha...

Would a mother appreciate a gift of items stolen from grave?
To the Editor, Recently my children purchased several items for Mother’s Day to be placed on the gravesite of Betty J. Hammond Haats at S.A. Hammond cemetery on Rennert Road. After placement we returned about two hours later and found everything had been removed from the grave. What I have to say is their mother was thankful for her children’s thoughts we have no doubt in our minds. However, what we are wondering is if your mother or wife...

County should allow residents to haul items off from dump sites
To the Editor, While I was at the county dump-site on Lamb Road recently, I noticed an old wheelbarrow sticking out of one of the Dumpsters. It was in great shape except for one broken handle. I asked the attendant if I could take it home as it would be an easy fix and we could use another one. She said, “No, it belongs to the county.” I said, “But the county doesn’t even know they own it.” She countered with, “Sorry, that’s the rules.” W...

Visit to Dr. Osborne’s office helps patient conquer fear of dentists
To the Editor, I know that I am not alone when I say that going to the dentist is not something anyone really looks forward to. I have been scared of the dentist since I was a small child, avoiding the office as much as possible and in turn neglecting my dental health. I recently decided that I would bite the bullet and get some preventative work done as I am not getting any younger and having a healthy mouth is important to me. I looked ...

Robeson fortunate to have Locklear as its register of deeds
To the Editor, I wanted to take a moment to thank a very loyal public servant of the citizens of Robeson County. Too often we who now live outside our birthplace only hear of the negative coming out of the county. Having been born and raised there and having myself spent many years there as a public servant of both the city of Lumberton and Robeson County as a detective, I also know that many times the good these folks do for the taxpayer...

Robeson County displays bigotry by supporting Amendment One
To the Editor, I’d like to thank the more than 20,000 voters of Robeson County for doing something that we as North Carolinians have not done since 1875, enshrining bigotry along lines of marriage in our state’s constitution. In 1875 the voters of North Carolina decided that interracial marriages should be constitutionally prohibited within the state. This week, in the year 2012, 137 years later, voters once again put on the mantle of big...
