A penny tax can add up to
success in our public schools

To the Editor, ‘Stef’ in “Goonies”, the 1985 film, upon discovering pennies at the bottom of a wishing well, reprimanded fellow Goonie ‘Mouth’ as he scooped coins into his pockets. “… These are somebody else’s wishes. They’re somebody else’s dreams.” Our dreams are large and small in the public schools. Some days we wish for more hours in the day, others we wish for new buildings with no mobile units and multi-purpose rooms that allow for...

Pembroke community loses a friend with death of Mr. Curt
To the Editor, The community of Pembroke is truly a better place because of Mr. Curt Locklear Sr. He was a friend to thousands and loved by so many. Many people who work in construction got their first work tools from Pembroke Hardware. They also got their first credit from him if they didn’t have the money to buy the tool. Mr. Curt always gave a person an honest chance and with his help, he led them to a better life. He also helped many ...

Citizens need to stand up and demand county is run correctly
To the editor, It has become evident the citizens of Robeson County no longer have a voice as to what goes on in this county; this is unfortunate since, we the citizens, are the ones who not only pay taxes, which pay the salaries of county employees, etc,. but the county commissioners work for the citizens. We do not work for them; apparently many are not aware of this since so many county issues are decided behind “closed doors” and the citiz...

Blowing in the wind: State can't afford windmill power
To the Editor, Have you heard the good news? The governor and the Council of State are thinking big again. Windmills are coming to North Carolina and bringing: 400 new jobs, $1 million per year to the landowners, and enough electricity to supply 55,000 homes. This could be the best idea since the Southport International Seaport. So what’s not to like? Plenty. Besides the adverse environment impact to waterfowl as well as sound and visual pollu...

State Employees’ Credit Union lives up to promise of helping people
To the Editor, As the world changes, it is difficult to find a business or organization that goes out of its way to help people. State Employees’ Credit Union really and truly goes above and beyond to helps its members and our communities. My credit union charges me a $1 a month for a checking account, and instead of them keeping that dollar they give me the option to donate it to a charitable foundation. The SECU foundation has helped build h...

Maxton officials give selves raise while cutting library, not cutting grass
To the Editor, As the former Maxton mayor, I have been silent too long while I watched the citizens of Maxton get raped by their elected officials, who seem to have destroyed everything the town had accomplished during the past 17 years. We now have a town manager and a police chief who are allowed to live out of town, 40 minutes to an hour away from Maxton. Are the commissioners of Maxton following their own charter, because as I recall both...

Sister thanks those who cared for her brother while he was ill
To the Editor, I would like thank all the wonderful people who cared for my brother Homer Sanders at Linkhaw Place Nursing Home. I was not able to go and see him but his home nurse Gail Garcar would keep me informed of his condition. I would also like to thank Floyd Funeral Services in Fairmont for the great kindness they showed Homer’s family and friends. I also would like to thank Pastor and Sister Hunt and the Northside Church of God for...

SRMC could face uncertain future because of nonpayment of services
To the Editor, It would be hard to argue that Southeastern Regional Medical Center is not one of Robeson County's top five assets. It is for this reason that every citizen in Robeson County should be disturbed by Ms. Sara Hottman's article regarding SRMC's shortfall of $438 million in Sunday's The Robesonian. Why? I know of no business that can sustain its operations much less grow or invest in the future when it is paid for only 36 percent o...

To the Editor, As a campaign organizer for Mr. Charles Graham, the Democratic primary winner for the District 47 seat in the state House of Representatives, I would like to take the opportunity to thank those of you who assisted in getting the vote out. Many thanks goes to the precinct leaders, poll workers, haulers, and all the people who gave their time in organizing meetings, finding places for all the precinct meetings, holding precinct b...

Mobile home park resident begs for help with violence
To the Editor, I moved to Lumberton over two years ago from South Carolina. I have lived in the area of N.C. 211 and Dogwood Estates since that time. I have watched as drug dealers stand outside all night long, dealing drugs. I hear gunshots at least twice a week, and have watched ambulances, police officers, and volunteers remove countless bodies from the trailer park. I am afraid to let my children play outside. I have bullet holes in my h...

Father proud of son, dog for rescue efforts at a house fire
To the Editor, This is about the recent fire on Charles Street. The fire department did a good job. But one hero left before firefighters arrived. I was watching the race and my son Brandon Hill was in the yard when he saw smoke and ran in our house. He asked me if I thought the smoke was from a grill, and I said no, that place is on fire. I called 911 and he ran into the burning home with his dog; her name is Smoke. He and Smoke went in ther...

Community owes thanks to Northeast Park contributors
To the Editor, The Northeast Park opened on June 22 and the first phase includes a large play area with space-age spongy landing areas financed by private donations. Our community owes a special thanks to an anonymous local business, Lumberton Children's Clinic, McDonald's of Lumberton, Friends of Recreation, Sam's Club of Lumberton, Doug and Rennie Mills, BB&T, Piedmont Natural Gas, Lumber River Real Estate, LPL Financial, and the Robeson C...

Society too easily forgets those who have ‘been placed’
To the Editor, Robeson County is fortunate to have a number of adult assisted living homes and nursing homes. I know of no one who wishes to “be placed.’’ I have family in the Hermitage Care Facility. Why do we forget these people still have needs? They need visitors, people who care, a clock for their room, nail clippers, shampoo, Kleenexes, hand cream, toothpaste, denture cream, socks, a wall calendar, or a fly swatter. They crave a little T...

No justice served in murder of son
To the Editor, What gave them the right to take away my life? Another year has passed and still no justice has been served in the murder of Chad Allen Arnette. On Valentines Day, February 15, 2007, his family suffered the pain like no other pain and lives with it daily, the loss of a loved one to murder, and knowing that the men that took Chad’s life and his family’s lives away from them are still out on bond living their lives with their fam...

To the Editor: President Bush’s January 19 commutations of former Border Patrol agents Ramos and Compeon should be commended as an act of mercy. The border agents received mandatory minimum sentences that the judge could not tailor to fit them or their crime. However, the border agents are not alone. As a High School teacher I know that thousands of first-time, low-level, and nonviolent drug offenders are serving sentences just as long or lon...
