Candidate thanks supporters, worries about Saddletree
To the Editor, I want to thank all of my supporters who came out in the cold rainy weather to support my bid to bring a voice from Saddletree on the Tribal Council. It is hard to run an honest campaign when the cards are stacked against you. I am not being a sore loser: Dewey McNeill beat me fair and square. We can hold our heads up high and say we did our best. I know that the Tribal Council did everything in its power to make sure that ...

New car dealer, wife love their new Lumberton home
To the Editor, Thank you Lumberton. After 30 years in the automotive business in Florida, my wife and I didn’t know what to expect when we purchased the beautiful Nissan dealership on Roberts Avenue. We moved from a very transient, big city metropolis to what we hoped was a quaint, friendly town in the Sandhills of North Carolina. You haven’t let us down. The Lumberton welcome has been overwhelming and so appreciated. We have just marke...

Collins has the knowledge, fortitude to serve the tribe
To the Editor, First, I would like to wish all Tribal Council candidates the best of luck during the election on Nov. 13. Millicent Strickland Collins, a District 5 candidate, has a very personal link to the origins of the Tribal Council. Our mother, Dr. Josephine Locklear, was instrumental as were many others in bringing the Lumbee Tribal Council to fruition. Millicent was there when we marched down Elm Street on June 23, 1999, in prot...

Grandmother thankful for those who rescued child
To the Editor, This letter is to send out my heartfelt appreciation to all the bikers, emergency workers and concerned citizens of the community that came to the rescue of my granddaughter Tierra Strickland Chavis. On Oct. 21, my granddaughter and I were out riding our golf cart, which is something she and I do every Sunday afternoon when the weather is nice. We took our usual route, which leads us to the cemetery at St. Annah Church, whe...

Sunday voting proved to be not worth the cost
To the Editor, This letter is in response to the article in the Oct. 23rd edition of The Robesonian titled “Slow going on Sunday vote.” I’m in agreement with others concerning Sunday voting.” Were the few votes that were cast in Robeson County on the Lord’s day worth the $ 1,035 that it cost the county? I believe not; this money could have been used to help families that are in need. I’m surprised that Mayor John McNeill of Red Springs ...

Chairman’s advertisement an insult to Lumbee people
To the Editor, I found the advertisement recently placed by Lumbee Tribal Chairman Paul Brooks a disgrace to the intelligence of the Lumbee people. If anything is was a “childish maneuver to cover one’s butt” against Tribal Council member McDuffie Cummings. Mr. Cummings served for many years as the town manager for the town of Pembroke and there were some people who didn’t like him. But, he kept good financial accountability for the town ...

NC needs McIntyre and his seniority in Congress
To the Editor, Unless you’ve been in a hole the past several weeks, you’ve seen David Rouzer’s campaign air countless negative advertisements about U.S. Rep. Mike McIntyre. In lieu of retaliating, I’d like to offer positive thoughts on my friend, Congressman Mike McIntyre. McIntyre’s awards and endorsements reflect his core values. He’s endorsed by the NRA, National Right to Life Committee, U.S. Chamber of Commerce, and the National Feder...

McIntyre shows moderation by voting in bipartisan manner
To the Editor, David Rouzer’s campaign has spent millions of dollars trying to convince voters in our district that Congressman McIntyre toes the party line. That couldn’t be further from the truth. Friends, don’t let yourselves be bought. Get the facts about McIntyre’s bi-partisan voting record. The National Journal, a non-partisan publication, recently scored McIntyre’s voting record and ranked him one of the most moderate members of Co...

Tribal candidate wants vote for positive change
To the Editor, I am a candidate running for Tribal District 5, which represents Prospect and Oxendine communities, on Nov. 13. I do not take this responsibility lightly nor do I believe that positive change will happen overnight. It is my belief that for an individual to vote, he or she must educate themselves about the candidate and know their platform. I have 20 years local government experience and have worked closely with the local Ec...

Wife says candidate puts others’ needs before his own
To the Editor, When my husband was serving his country in Cu Chi, Vietnam, with the U.S. Army, he had perhaps the chance of a lifetime to see celebrity Bob Hope, who was there touring with the USO, entertaining the troops. Because of the nature of his job, someone always had to be on duty. Even though he had rank, he was the one to volunteer to stay behind and be on duty. He didn’t get to see Bob Hope but that is the type of person he is. H...

District 8 represented by the ‘real deal’ in Kissell
To the Editor, “He is the real deal.” That is what a lifelong friend of mine said after meeting Rep. Larry Kissell. I help lead a center that offers care for caregivers. Among our clients are Reserve and National Guard military chaplains. They are amazing, often pastors of local congregations, who are called up to care for our troops. They may be serving in North Carolina one day, the next, praying with wounded soldiers or consoling a f...

Hudson already prepared to get to work for District 8
To the Editor, What kind of congressman does the 8th Congressional District of North Carolina need? It needs a congressman who can go to work on day one. Richard Hudson is ready to start work on day one. His whole life he has fought for the conservative cause, he has worked on several different congressional staffs and as soon as he is sworn in, he can start work. While Rep. Larry Kissell might be a fine gentleman, he is not the type of r...

Murderer returns to streets to sell poison to our children
To the Editor, As I sit here on a beautiful day that the Lord has blessed me with, my heart is heavy. I’m burdened, not only for myself and my children, but for your children and your neighbor’s children. Just a few days ago, an old wound was opened when I learned that the person responsible for killing my son 14 years ago has been arrested in Robeson County for possession of some of the most dangerous drugs on the street. He has been all...

Pipeline construction is threat to local cemeteries
To the Editor, For some time now I have been noticing the natural gas line that has been zigzagging across Robeson County. Recently I found that cemeteries are being threatened, and in some cases, destroyed by the construction of this pipeline. As a historian, I take issue with the fact that cemeteries have been destroyed, and others are about to be destroyed, and the cemetery laws of North Carolina being broken. I was recently driving al...

Tribal Council eats well with Lumbee housing money
To the Editor, Jimmy Goins was tribal chairman for six of the 11 years our tribe has had an unconstitutional Tribal Council. He signed the multi-million dollar Lewin contract as he was leaving office, beginning three years of tribal governance chaos. While in office Goins supported executive branch powers and often opposed Tribal Council efforts. Today he supports the 21-member Tribal Council and opposes the executive branch. It sounds li...

Democrats want Americans to depend on the government
To the Editor, Folks, we have less than two weeks to elect a president to lead this great country. Please let me explain a bit about Democrats and Republicans. Democrats want a country full of dependent people who rely on government for their every need and want. Republicans believe in self reliance and the American people. Democrats think Americans are stupid and can’t make it without their guidance and support. But this pits one against...
