Commissioners decide who gets the jobs during secret meetings To the Editor,
Is Robeson County becoming so crooked now that there are meetings behind closed doors? It seems to me that the county commissioners knew from day one that Mr. Ricky Harris had the job of county manager. If the people of Robeson County would wake up, they will realize that the job was never opened to the public.
Then again, most jobs are not offered to the public, but are given to those individuals handpicked by the county c...
Unite at Lumbee Homecoming to honor those who we have lost To the Editor,
In a couple of weeks it will be time for the Lumbee Homecoming. It is one time a year when everyone sets aside their squabbles and come together to just be themselves.
In between the homecomings of last two years our county, our country and the Lumbee Tribe have lost many people who made a positive impact on the lives of the people. From the man who made “Lumbee” a household name, Dr. Randolph (Ranny) Umberger, to Rev. Juli...
State needs to reverse decision to take DMV office from Beasleys To the Editor,
I opened my Sunday paper and there it was on the front page, another example of our state turning its back on us here in Robeson County. The Beasley family has been an icon in this community for more than 30 years running the DMV office. They always provided great service, courteous smiles and warm welcomes to everyone who walked through their doors.
And now not only do they have to grieve over the loss of a wonderful mothe...
Tribal Council members are stealing from the Lumbee people To the Editor,
In response to Eric Locklear’s letter to the editor on June 12, I agree with you 100 percent.
Who do the Tribal Council members think they are? Eighteen thousand dollars to purchase Ipads for each member of the council, $55,000 for trips to Alaska, and $50 per month for each council member to have Internet cards for these Ipads? That money can help a lot of tribal members in a number of needy ways, but the council doesn’t c...
Motorist wants to know why gasoline is higher in St. Pauls To the Editor,
Will someone please tell me why gasoline in St. Pauls, N.C., is still at $3.50 a gallon in some places? Why is it high here in St. Pauls, N.C., while in Lumberton and the surrounding counties it is $3.28 and lower? Why are the merchants who own gas stations in St. Pauls, N.C., not making the adjustments like they should to lower the price?
St. Pauls merchants, do you miss my smiling face? I can buy my gas in Lumberton, alon...
Grandparents say schools not protecting child from beatings To the Editor,
This letter is concerning our grandson. Labrien Locklear Jabrien is 7 years old and just completed the first grade at Rex-Rennert School.
On March 21, six kids beat him up while an assistant teacher was talking on her cellular phone. When he went back inside the classroom he tried to tell the teacher what happened. She told him to sit down and be quiet. Labrien had to stay at school about two to three hours with dirt and gr...
St. Pauls official says newspaper unfairly pinning crimes on town To the Editor,
I am writing to object to the reporting of crimes as occurring in St. Pauls, when the address is actually miles, in many cases up to 10 miles, outside of St. Pauls.
The town of St. Pauls government cannot be expected to answer to the public for crimes that do not occur here, but for which we may have to answer, when they are reported as occurring here — mistakenly — by reporters. Nor do the 99.9 percent of law-abiding citiz...
This nation prospered before Jesus Christ was pushed away To the Editor,
Looking at human nature the establishment of the United States is truly miraculous. The founders, numbering around 250 men from the 13 colonies, some several hundred miles apart, came together by their own financial means and stood up to the world power on their day with one accord: Almighty God was invoked, independence was declared, revolution was wrought and our nation was established. Then came a 200-plus year journey of ...
Shut-in woman wants people to know Prophet Walt is back on TV To the Editor,
Thank you for keeping us updated on our county. I feel like I am still out there involved. I am not able to drive or walk as I am in a wheelchair. All I have is the newspaper and TV. I have been a long-time watcher of channel 14, Brother Billy’s.
But around Christmas time things over there changed; Brother Billy is gone to his reward. His helper Prophet Walt took the lead when he passed; he is a fine man and was doing a gre...
Tribal Council’s spending spree, nepotism embarrass the Lumbee To the Editor.
For five years now I have shown the light on injustice toward Lumbee people wherever it may exist in our tribal government. Pearlene Revels and Louise Mitchell now are faulting me for what has been my mission. Both individuals have publicly criticized me and bullied me personally. It speaks loudly when opponents cannot argue the facts that you present and their recourse is to attack personally.
I am tired of dishonest peopl...
Despite law degree, Obama doesn’t understand limits of the government To the Editor,
A lot of folks question Obama’s place of birth. I never gave it much thought. But I do wonder about his knowledge of the U.S. Constitution.
We’ve been told he graduated from an Ivy League school with a degree in Law. We were informed that he taught Constitutional Law at the University of Chicago Law School. So, it would be surprising that he would think the federal government has unlimited power.
The U.S. Supreme Court ru...
Administrators provide direction, but teachers are key to education To the Editor,
What can we do to make our schools better? Improvement has occurred the past few years, but there is always room for more improvement. To make this a reality, the administration, faculty, and staff must first focus on some intangible factors such as respecting one another as colleagues who are striving together to provide our children the greatest opportunity for a quality education.
Next we must ensure that the support, re...
Family says newspaper article based on ignorance, was upsetting To the Editor,
On the morning of Dec. 20, 1979, God blessed me and my husband with a beautiful baby girl, Crystal Shanell Locklear. Our daughter was a wonderful mother and a very hard worker. She was an inspiration to anyone who knew her. Her life was taken at the age of 26 on Oct. 15, 2006.
She left behind an amazing daughter who has brought us so much joy and happiness to our lives. Chole’ is so much like her loving mother. We thank God...
National media fed us with lies on effects on Amendment One To the Editor,
Did anyone notice during the run up to the primary on Tuesday, May 8, the deception that was attempted on the public? The media warned us of all the loss of benefits, increase of domestic violence, harm to single parents and children that would occur if Amendment One was approved, but none of that was in the amendment. Why, Bill Clinton called with a recording twice to let me know how bad Amendment One was going to be for Nor...
Every county employee would benefit from Leadership Academy To the Editor,
As an employee of Robeson County, I have high regard for county administration and our Board of County Commissioners for their support of the Robeson Leadership Academy. The Robeson Leadership Academy had trained 80 county employees to function as a team, while improving their individual efficiency in their jobs. The economic cost is minuscule compared to the knowledge gained by the participants in the program.
Cathy Graham...
Doctor who established lap band program comments on article To the Editor,
I would like to comment on the article regarding weight loss surgery in the paper on Sunday, May 27
The lap band program was started at Southeastern Regional Medical Center in 2007 by myself, Dr. Barry Williamson, and the first surgery was performed in 2008 by me. I have performed over 150 of the surgeries and have infection rates that are one third of the national average, and complication rates of less than one half of th...
