Stewart wins cup race at Dover
DOVER, Del. (AP) — With one big move, Tony Stewart put Juan Pablo Montoya and a sluggish season well behind him. After a mundane start, Stewart is back in Victory Lane — and in the thick of Chase contention. Stewart's outside pass on Montoya with three laps left was enough to win Sunday at Dover International Speedway and snap a 30-race winless streak. "Our guys at our shop have been digging," Stewart said. "None of these guys get down. We ...

Kuchar's clutch putts help him hold on at Memorial
DUBLIN, Ohio — Matt Kuchar crossed the Memorial Tournament off his wish list and then set his sights on a couple of other items — grabbing a major championship and winning again at Muirfield Village later this year. Kuchar made a clutch 5-foot, par-saving putt on the 17th hole and then closed out a two-stroke win over Kevin Chappell by holing a 20-foot birdie putt on the final hole Sunday. It gave Kuchar one of the biggest wins of his career ...

St. Pauls wrestling raises more than $9,500 in two months
Friday wasn’t the first time that St. Pauls High School principal Hoyt McCormick kissed a dog, but it might have been the most watched. As the final part of an afternoon assembly, McCormick kneeled down towards the floor, leaned to his left and caught Royce, a 6-year-old Bulldog on loan from Dial’s Krazy Kennels in Pembroke, with a smooch on his right cheek, holding it momentarily as the student body took it in. “I love on a dog every night ...

Britt repeats as baseball's top player
FAIRMONT — It’s easy to pick out Fairmont’s leader of the clubhouse. He’s tall and lanky, has a cannon for an arm and was one of the area’s most patient hitters despite a focus on pitching throughout his career. The cutter, his strength, was nearly untouchable. “That’s the out pitch nobody wants to see,” said Fairmont catcher Chance Leggett. “It can overpower you. Right-handers struggle with it.” Alex Britt, the Three Rivers Conference’s t...

Skipper dominates as softball player of the year
LUMBERTON — When it comes to the softball, Lumberton senior Meagan Skipper simply loves the game. Not only does she work with her team for hours after school, and but afterwards she’ll head home to keep on practicing. “If I’m not here (at LHS) playing softball, I’m at the house either pitching to my dad or hitting off the tee, doing anything I can to get better,” Skipper said. It’s years of work that paid off in her senior season. Skipper,...

McDonald earns top coach in first season
PEMBROKE — Some called it arrogance while others preached confidence. Bryan McDonald’s near guarantee of a playoff berth prior to his first season at Purnell Swett seemed audacious last summer, but the veteran coach’s promise came to fruition after all as the Rams shook off youthful inexperience to finish in the top half of the 4A Southeastern Conference. The title of Robeson County Coach of the Year is well-deserved after McDonald led the R...
