The Lumberton soccer team lost a 1-0 heartbreaker at Richmond on Wednesday, dropping its first Sandhills Athletic Conference game of the season.

Carlos Alcocer netted the go-ahead goal from 30 yards out with 21 minutes left for the Raiders (5-3 2-2 SAC) to top the Pirates (6-2, 2-1 SAC).

Lumberton will be back in action next week against Scotland.

In other SAC action, Purnell Swett lost on the road to Seventy-First, 5-4.

St. Pauls earned a 5-2 victory at East Columbus in Three Rivers Conference play.

The Bulldogs scored a pair of goals in the first half and added three more in the second to claim the victory.

CROSS COUNTRY

The Fairmont cross country team had a solid showing in its meet at Luther Britt Park in Lumberton on Wednesday.

Corry Addison claimed first in the 5,000-meter run for the Golden Tornadoes, who won the team event, with teammate Jordan Jacobs earning a runner-up finish and Caleb Argueta taking fourth.

Red Springs’ Steven Blue earned a third-place finish in the 5,000-meter run, helping the Red Devils earn second place as a team.
