AUGUSTA, Ga. — Sophomore Gina Ryan played 135 shutout minutes in net for The University of North Carolina at Pembroke soccer team last week and has been named the Peach Belt Conference Goalkeeper of the Week, the league office announced Monday.
Ryan started and played the first 45 minutes in goal for the Braves in a 5-1 win over Converse and was a perfect 1-for-1 in saves. The Cape Carteret, North Carolina native backed that up with her fourth shutout of the year in a 1-0 victory over PBC foe Francis Marion. Ryan made all three saves to pick up her seventh victory of the season in net.
The UNCP netminder now leads the league and ranks 16th nationally in save percentage at .884 and sits atop the conference and 25th in the nation in goals against average at 0.55.
Ryan and the Braves are back in action Wednesday at home against league-leading and No. 5 Flagler. First touch is set for 11 a.m. at Lumbee River EMC Stadium. The Saints (5-0-1, 10-0-1 PBC) are the lone undefeated team in the conference and one of just nine squads in Division II that have not been saddled with a loss this season.
