Staff Report

LUMBERTON — The Robeson County Parks and Recreation 12-and-under football team will play in the state finals of the SWAC All-Star tournament on Saturday in Mebane at Eastern Alamance High School.

The 36-player squad, comprised of players throughout Robeson County, defeated Scotland County and Henderson-Vance to advance to the championship.

The team will play at 1 p.m. against Mebane for the state title.

“We have a great group of players on the team with players from all over the county,” said Ricky McKinnon, assistant director of Robeson County’s Parks and Recreation Department.

“We’re proud of them, very proud, win or lose. But we want to win. I’m real proud of them because it’s our first year (competing in the event). It was a difficult job putting this team together.”

Donell Ferguson, director of Red Springs’ Parks and Recreation Department, is head coach of the county’s squad.
