Local Roundup: Red Springs opens TRC play with a sweep

TABOR CITY — The Red Springs basketball teams won their Three Rivers Conference openers on the road at South Columbus.

The girls team won 39-20. Taya Jones had 16 points and seven rebounds for Red Springs (1-2, 1-0 TRC) and Taylynn Atkinson had 11 points and 10 rebounds.

Caleel Mitchell paced Red Springs (2-1, 1-0 TRC) in the boys game to a 45-41 win. Mitchell had 16 points and Monte’ Wilkerson added 14 points, four rebounds and four assists.

Fairmont takes two from West Bladen

FAIRMONT — The Fairmont basketball teams opened Three Rivers Conference play with a sweep over West Bladen at home.

In the girls game, Kiara Page’s double-double led Fairmont (2-1, 1-0 TRC) to a 67-48 win. The senior forward had 33 points and 11 rebounds for her second double-double this week. Krishay Moore added nine points.

The Fairmont boys (3-0, 1-0 TRC) stayed undefeated on the year with an 81-39 win.

In other TRC action, St. Pauls’ girls team won its second game of the year with a 46-41 win over East Columbus at home. T.J. Eichelberger had 20 points for the Lady Bulldogs.
