Dent earns alternate spot on national racquetball team

STOCKTON, Calif. — Elena Dent of Lumberton has qualified as first alternate for the national racquetball team following a strong showing at last month’s 2015 USA Racquetball National Junior Olympic Championships in California.

The national team will practice for a week in August at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo., before competing in this year’s Racquetball Olympics in November in the Dominican Republic.

Dent finished second in the 14+ under Gold Division doubles in California, partnering with Graciana Wargo of Palm Harbor, Fla., for the silver medal. Dent also placed fourth in singles.

Her brother Dominic Dent competed in California as well, earning a bronze medal for 16+ in the White Division. Paired with Nathanial Furman of Prospect, Ky., Dominic Dent earned a 4th place in doubles in the consolation bracket.

The Lumberton siblings will both remain in their respective brackets next year, while most players ahead of them will move into the next age grouping. The 2016 National Junior Olympic Championships will take place in Minneapolis.
