Lumberton volleyball tops South View for season-opening win

LUMBERTON — Behind 19 assists from Christina Dickerson, the Lumberton volleyball team opened its season on Monday with a win in four sets over South View.

The Pirates (1-0) won the first and second sets, 25-22 and 25-23, and lost the third set at 25-23, before closing the match with an 25-21 victory.

London Thompson finished with eight kills and four digs for Lumberton, with Madison Canady contributing four kills and a pair of aces. Lindsay Bridgeman added seven digs for the Pirates.

“(We) played well for first game of the year,” Lumberton coach Tre’ Britt said. “(We) still have a lot of things we need to work on, but pleased with the intensity and the fight the girls put in to open up the season.”

The Pirates’ jayvee squad earned an 2-0 win over South View. Lumberton will travel to Pine Forest on Wednesday for its next match.

Altamirano paces Lumberton boys soccer in 2-0 win at South View

Rene Altamirano netted two goals for the Lumberton soccer team on Monday at South View, leading the Pirates to an 2-0 win in their season opener.

Alex Wober posted the shutout in goal for the Pirates (1-0), recording eight saves to keep the Tigers at bay. Altamirano broke a scoreless tie in the first half on an unassisted break-away goal through the middle of the defense. His second goal came on a penalty kick in the second half.

St. Pauls girls tennis beats Grays Creek

ST. PAULS — The St. Pauls girls tennis team opened its season with an 7-2 win over Grays Creek on Monday.

The Bulldogs (1-0) will travel to Grays Creek on Thursday for a rematch, before heading to Purnell Swett on Monday.

St. Pauls boys soccer loses thriller to Richmond

The St. Pauls boys soccer team fell short in its comeback bid against Richmond on Monday, losing 3-2 to the Raiders in the season opener for both squads.

Trailing 2-0 in the second half, the Bulldogs (0-1) rallied back to tie the score with goals from Chris Irra and Alexis Mendez.

But the Raiders netted the game winner in the final minute on a corner kick to seal the victory.

St. Pauls will host Hoke on Wednesday.
