Brewer leads St. Pauls softball to win

ST. PAULS — Freshman Brianna Brewer had quite the debut for the St. Pauls softball team on Wednesday, helping the Lady Bulldogs earn an 8-4 win over Douglas Byrd.

Brewer finished with two hits, two RBIs, and pitched a complete game in the circle with 11 strikeouts for the Lady Bulldogs (1-0), who earned their first opening-day win since 2011.

Danielle Gray also logged a pair of hits for St. Pauls with three runs scored. Jallissa McKinnon had two hits and two stolen bases.

St. Pauls returns to action on Friday when it travels to Douglas Byrd for a rematch.

Tapia duo pace Red Springs soccer

FAYETTEVILLE — Viridiana and Noelia Tapia scored two goals each to led the Red Springs girls soccer team to a 4-0 win over E.E. Smith on Wednesday.

Wendy Molina finished with two assists for the Lady Red Devils (1-0), who return to action Friday at East Bladen.

In other Three Rivers Conference action, St. Pauls earned a 3-3 draw at Westover. The Lady Bulldogs led 2-1 before the Wolverines stormed back with three goals to notch the tie.

The other soccer match of the night saw Laney earn a mercy-rule 9-0 win at Lumberton. The Lady Pirates will be back on the pitch Friday at Pine Forest.

Red Springs baseball rolls past Westover

FAYETTEVILLE — After dropping its first game of the season, the Red Springs baseball team rebounded with a convincing 21-1 win at Westover on Wednesday.

The Red Devils used a 14-run first inning to set up the five-inning win over the Wolverines, who scored their lone run in the second inning. Red Springs tacked on three more runs in the top half of the second and followed with four runs in the fourth frame.

Red Springs will open Three Rivers Conference play on Tuesday when it welcomes St. Pauls to town.

In other Three Rivers action, South Robeson earned a thrilling 8-7 win over West Bladen in eight innings.

Lumberton softball routs Terry Sanford

LUMBERTON — The Lumberton softball team’s bats continued their hot streak to start the season with a 20-8 win in five innings over Terry Sanford on Wednesday.

For Lumberton, Morgan Britt went 3-for-3 with a home run and five runs scored, Kasey West had three hits and three RBI Katie Kinlaw recorded two hits with a home run, LeAnn Nobles homered and Erin Maynor two hits and four RBIs. Ariel Allbrooks earned the win pitching for the Lady Pirates

Anna Suggs went 3-for-4 with three RBIs for Terry Sanford.

South Robeson withstands Knights in extras

ROWLAND — Cody Scott picked up the game-winning hit in the eighth inning as South Robeson topped West Bladen 8-7 at home on Wednesday.

Scott went 3-for-5 batting with two RBIs. Kevin Chavis collected four hits and Jolan Locklear added a pair for the Mustangs.

St. Pauls tennis tops Red Springs

RED SPRINGS — Senior Victor Garcia led the St. Pauls boys tennis team to a 9-0 win at Red Springs on Wednesday to open the season.

The Bulldogs will continue Three Rivers Conference play next week when they travel to South Robeson on Monday.
