LUMBERTON — Lumberton native Elena Dent shined bright in the Sunshine State over the weekend, earning top honors at the Florida Racquetball state tournament in Sarasota.

Dent, 15, was the only teenager to ascend to the winner’s podium in the event, capturing the Women’s A Singles Division by yielding only nine total points to opponents.

“I was really excited about winning women’s A’s,” Dent said. “I was very pleased with the way I played. My shot selection was great, and I was serving my best.”

Dominic, Elena’s 18-year-old brother and a senior at Lumberton High School, will look to follow his sister’s lead this weekend when he competes at the North Carolina Racquetball state tournament in Charlotte.

The sibling duo will head to Stockton, California in June to compete in the Junior National Racquetball Tournament.

For Elena, the training and preparation starts now.

“I know what I need to work on and improve,” she said. “So I will continue working on those skills to make my game better.”
