RAEFORD — Lumberton tennis coach Jeff Kinlaw was named the Southeastern Conference Coach of the Year, announced Thursday morning by the league.

Kinlaw helped the Pirates earn a second-place finish in the SEC this season with a 10-3 overall mark, 8-2 in conference.

Dominic Dent and Alex Wober were the Pirates top two singles players this season and each earned regional berths in the conference tournament. Purnell Swett’s Bailey Dial also clinched a berth at regionals.

In doubles, Lumberton’s Josh Britt and Cole Lewis came in second in the conference and will move on to regionals.

St. Pauls, Red Springs pick up high marks at TRC tennis championship

ST. PAULS — The Red Springs doubles team of Bernardo Padron and Ruffo Capote won the Three Rivers Conference doubles championships over St. Pauls’ Jaylyn McNair and Carlos Luna Lopez.

Pardon and Capote won 6-3, 6-1 to take the title.

In singles action, Mason Hewett of South Columbus defeated Alex Hernandez of St. Pauls 6-3, 6-1 in the championship match. Victor Garcia from St. Pauls defeated Noah Jarman of South Columbus 6-2, 1-6, 6-6 (7-4) for third place in the conference.

St. Pauls rallies to top East Columbus

LAKE WACCAMAW — Down by a run after the fifth inning, the St. Pauls baseball team scored four runs in the top of the sixth to defeat East Columbus on the road by a 9-6 score.

Trevan Locklear picked up the win on the mound for the Bulldogs. Dawson Caulder had three hits, two runs scored and an RBI, J.J. Oxendine had two hits and an RBI and Jordan Thomas had a pair of hits and a pair of RBIs.
