PEMBROKE — Red Springs’ Sha’nia Leach and St. Pauls’ Dakota Oxendine reigned supreme at the Three Rivers Conference Championship track meet at The University of North Carolina at Pembroke on Wednesday, with both players earning the nod for top performers of the year.
Leach won the 100-meter dash, 200-meter dash, triple jump and long jump events to claim female of the year honors for the Red Devils. Oxendine earned male of the year honors after claiming top honors in the triple jump and high jump events. He also helped the Bulldogs finish as the top overall team at the event.
The St. Pauls boys scored 187.5 points to finish as the top team, with Red Springs claiming a runner-up finish at 138.5. The Bulldogs and Red Devils followed each other again on the girls side, with St. Pauls finishing second and Red Springs finishing third.

Pirates, Rams get bounced in first round
LAURINBURG — The Lumberton baseball team lost 3-2 in nine innings at Scotland on Thursday.
The Scots advance to play at Purnell Swett tonight in the Southeastern Conference semifinals. Daniel Carter, Kyle Skipper and Brandon Norris each had a hit for the Pirates.
In softball action, Hoke County defeated Purnell Swett 13-9 at home to set up a fourth meeting with Lumberton in tonight’s semifinals. Kierra Locklear had a solo home run in the second inning and Desaree Dunham had a three-run homer later in the inning.
Lady Rams advance in SEC soccer tourney
PEMBROKE — The Purnell Swett girls soccer team defeated Hoke County 5-0 at home to win its 10th game of the season, setting a program mark, and advanced to play at top-seeded Pinecrest today in the Southeastern Conference tournament.
Freshman Abi Lowry recorded a hat trick to improve her season total to 24 goals. Khalie Jones had two goals as well for the Lady Rams.
St. Pauls sweeps West Columbus
ST. PAULS — St. Pauls picked up a pair of wins over West Columbus with the baseball team winning 2-1 and the softball team winning 11-1 over West in five innings.
In softball, Danielle Gray went 3-for-4 with three RBIs, Kenija McGougan went 3-for-3 with an RBI and Mysiah McCallister went 2-for-3 with an RBI.
Brianna Brewer pitched five inning, allowed three hits and struck out six.
Ted McNeill picked up the win in baseball’s close win and Dawson Caulder and Aaron Revels each had a hit for the Bulldogs.
Fairmont splits with Gators
FAIRMONT — The Fairmont baseball team defeated East Columbus 9-0 at home, while the softball team fell 20-1 in four innings to split the Three Rivers Conference doubleheader.
Randy Floyd, Julius Caulder and Delvin Sanderson combined to hold the Gators to two hits in the game. Skyler Hunt had a double and three RBIs for Fairmont and Tyler Hodge added two hits.
In other TRC baseball action, Whiteville topped South Columbus 9-1.
In other TRC softball action, South Columbus won 20-6 over Red Springs and Whiteville defeated South Robeson 11-1.
