INDIANAPOLIS – The 24th-ranked and fifth-seeded UNC Pembroke baseball team will face 27th-ranked and fourth-seeded Catawba on Thursday in the opening round of the 2017 NCAA Southeast Regional at the University of Mount Olive’s Scarborough Field, the NCAA announced late Sunday evening. First pitch of Thursday’s contest is scheduled for 7 p.m.
It is the program’s second appearance in the NCAA postseason, and the first since the Braves (40-15) trekked to Mount Olive in 2011 after capturing the Peach Belt Conference Tournament championship.
The tournament will have a comfortable feel for the Braves (40-15) who are one of four PBC teams to earn a spot in the NCAA Southeast Regional. Sixth-seeded Georgia College (35-13) earned the league’s automatic bid with a win over the Black & Gold in the PBC Tournament championship game on Saturday in Florence, S.C. Second-seeded North Georgia (42-10) and third-seeded USC Aiken (39-13) will make the trip to Mount Olive as well.
Top-ranked and top-seeded Mount Olive (47-8) will play host to the 7-team, 5-day double elimination tournament after earning an automatic bid by virtue of a 5-4 win over Belmont Abbey in the Conference Carolinas Tournament championship game. Seventh-seeded Lincoln Memorial (33-17) also earned an automatic bid after topping Carson-Newman in the South Atlantic Conference Tournament championship game. The Railsplitters will be joined in the postseason by SAC rival, Catawba (37-15).
