FORT WORTH — Before preparing to defend his title at The Memorial tournament in Ohio next week, William McGirt will take on Colonial Country Club in the Dean and Deluca Invitational in Fort Worth.
The Fairmont native has played at Colonial in each of his seven full seasons on the PGA Tour, making the cut in five of his previous six appearances. His best finish (T21) came in 2014. He earned a tie for 47th last season.
Grouped with David Lingmerth and Nick Taylor, McGirt tees off from the opening hole at 1:44 p.m. Eastern time on Thursday.
Colonial, a short, par-70 course at 7,209 yards, tends to benefit the shorter hitters who keep the ball in the fairway and hit a ton of greens.
McGirt is among the best on the tour in both categories, coming in at third in fairways hit and 29th in greens in regulation percentage.
The 48th-ranked player in the world, McGirt is currently 58th in the FedEx Cup standings and is coming off a tie for 22nd at the Players Championship, which he co-lead after the opening round.
His finish in Florida helped him eclipse the $1 million mark in earnings for the fourth consecutive season.
