WHITEVILLE — Whiteville’s MacKenzie Gore is the North Carolina Gatorade high school baseball player of the year.
An East Carolina recruit, Gore is one of the top MLB prospects in the nation and is projected to be a top-10 pick in June’s MLB Draft.
The 6-foot-2, 175-pound southpaw senior pitcher is ranked as the nation’s No. 4 recruit in the class of 2017 by Baseball America.
Gore, the MVP of the 2014 and 2015 NCHSAA 1A state championship series, has led the Wolfpack to a 23-6 record this season and a fourth straight appearance in the title series.
He is currently 9-0 on the mound this season with a 0.22 ERA and 132 strikeouts. At the plate, Gore is hitting at a clip of .480 with six home runs, 25 RBIs and an .880 slugging percentage.
Gore and the Wolfpack will face Murphy this weekend at N.C. State University in Raleigh.
