Homecoming event set July 2

PEMBROKE — The 30th annual Lumbee Homecoming 5K Run and Fun Walk will be held on July 2 at the LRDA Office complex.

Registration is from 6 to 7 a.m., and the race begins at 7:15 a.m. The race, which honors James Arthur Jones, is coordinated by the Pembroke Kiwanis Club.

There will be trophies for first, second and third place in each age category. Advance registration is $15 at LRDA and is $20 on the event’s day. Participants get a free T-shirt.

Walkers can participate at no cost.

Jones retirement ceremony July 2

PEMBROKE — A ceremony will be held to honor James A. Jones of the Prospect Community on July 2.

The free event will be held at 1 p.m. at The University of North Carolina at Pembroke Actvities Center. Jones is a retired educator, administrator and a World War II veteran. He also served as a campaign manager for Ronnie Sutton, a longtime legislator.

Registration for bike run Sunday

PEMBROKE — A bike run will be held on Sunday to help with medical expenses for Greg Wilkins, who was recently diagnosed with cancer.

Registration is from 1 to 2 p.m., and the the run starts at 2:30 p.m. Riders will leave from C&P Mini Mart in Pembroke. Motorcycles and classic cars are welcome.

The cost is $10 for singles, $15 for doubles and $10 for cars. There will be a 50/50 raffle, door prizes and an auction.

The rain date is June 19.

Gilchrist to be promoted to E7

FAIRMONT — Sgt. First Class Tremayne Gilchrist, a Fairmont resident, was recently promoted to the rank of E7.

Gilchrist graduated from the NCO Academy in Fort Rucker, Ala.

He is the son of Jerry and Frances Gilchrist and the husband of Lakeisha Gilchrist, and graduated from Fairmont High School in 1998.

Pembroke Pvt. gets assignment

PEMBROKE — Pvt. Christian Alexander Cummings, a Pembroke resident, recently graduated from Cavalry Scout One Station Unit Training at Fort Knox, Ky.

He will serve in the 101st Airborne Division at Fort Campbell, Ky.

He is the son of Alesia Cummings of Pembroke and Michael and Theresa Cummings of Cary, and the grandson of Howard and Alene Jones of Pembroke; Shelbie Cummings of Marianna, Fla.; and Querlon “Bob” and Susan Cummings of Bainbridge, Ga.

Concert continue Thursday

LUMBERTON — The Alive After 5 concert series will continue Thursday with the Carolina Breakers.

The show will last from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the corner of Third and Water streets in Lumberton. Other performers include the Black Water Rhythm & Blues Band on June 16; Craig Woolard on June 23; and the Band of Oz on June 30.
