My name is Lolita McMillan. I work at Robeson County Public Library. If you have not been to the library lately, stop in and take a look. Of course we have books, but we also have VHS tapes, DVDs and programs for children and adults.
During the day I can usually be found in the computer lab. I help out as much as I can, but some of our patrons know much more than I do about using the computer. I have met many great people in the library, and the regulars have become like family.
Part of my duties is ordering the fiction books. When I’m in the computer lab, I read some of the many book catalogs I receive. I also use several best-seller’ lists. Some of you may have noticed that in the last few months, I have added new authors. Patrons have requested several different authors to spice up the genres. I have discovered several new authors that I really like. Whether you prefer romance, mystery, science fiction or action adventure, I’m sure we can find something for you. So far I have gotten good feedback. Feel free to come in and make requests or suggestions. I can’t order every book, but I will do my best.
If you really need or want to read something that we don’t have we can borrow the book from other libraries in North Carolina. This may take two or three weeks so be sure to request the book at least three weeks before you need it.
I am also in charge of the audiovisual department. We have books on cassette and also on CD. At first I missed holding the actual book in my hands, but I’ve learned to enjoy books on cassette or CD. They are great if you are taking a trip. For me the trip doesn’t seem to take as long. When I am cooking or cleaning house, the chore does not seem so tedious. Give them a try and let me know what you think.
I can’t order VHS tapes anymore but we still have many of them. Our VHS tapes still checkout. I’m often asked why I don’t get rid of them, but we still have people who just have a VCR or prefer them to DVDs. There might be a movie you missed in the past, why not come to the library? We may just have it.
I really love ordering the DVDs. I usually check the top-seller listed on Amazon. Anything by Disney is usually a must and of course I check my list of patron recommendations. If popular titles have been ordered and requested, I try to make sure to call the person who asked for it and allow them to check it out first.
When a box of DVDs arrives, it is like Christmas time for me. I probably look like a kid when I open the boxes and get them ready to be processed. It does not take long for them to be added to the computer. All of our audiovisual material check out for three days. As long as you return them on time, there is no charge. So before you rent a movie, or watch reruns on TV, come by the library and see what we have to offer. I don’t think I could have a better job than ordering new books and DVDs.
I’m too old for Santa Claus, but I have the next best thing.
