UNCP’s standout junior guard started all 30 games for the Braves last season and was eighth in the conference in scoring at 15.3 points per game. Brackett was an All-PBC Tournament selection in March and earned honorable mention preseason All-American accolades on Sept. 15 by The Sporting News.
The Florence, S.C. native scored 16 points against No. 1 North Carolina during last week’s 42-point exhibition loss, including consecutive layups during a brief run that put the Braves up eight points with 8:52 left in the first half.
He is the first Brave to ever be named preseason all-conference.
“This honor means a lot for our program,” Brackett said after Monday’s practice. “I feel like I wouldn’t have received this honor without my teammates and a great coaching staff.
Brackett scored 20 or more points seven times last season and was held to single digits in just five games. The volume shooter joins USC Aiken’s Alvin Brown, Georgia Southwestern’s Phillip Brown and Colin Slotter and Francis Marion’s Like Turner in the All-PBC starting five.
UNCP hosts Athletes in Action Thursday night at 7 inside the English E. Jones Center for a final tune-up before the season opener Nov. 11. Brackett is one of a handful of speedy guards expected to play a lot of minutes this season for a team coming off a record-setting season.
“We’ve got a veteran backcourt, something I think you’ve got to have to play well in the Peach Belt (Conference),” UNCP coach Ben Miller said. “We need good guard play. We have an experienced group and Shahmel’s a great scorer.”
