Jonathan Bryant, 20, was shot in the stomach with a 12-gauge shotgun after an argument with a man he knew at 3714 McGirt Road, said sheriff's Maj. Randal Patterson.
"We're not sure yet what the argument was about," Patterson said.
Patterson said the argument started on the front porch and that, at some point, Bryant was asked to leave by a resident of the home. The man then went inside the home, got a shotgun and came out the back door. When he came around the side of the house, Bryant fired at him with a semi-automatic 9mm handgun.
The shot missed, and the man shot Bryant.
Bryant, of 237 Carl St., was taken to Scotland Memorial Hospital and then flown by helicopter to Duke University Medical Center at about 6:30 this morning.
Patterson said charges against both men are pending and depend on the outcome of Bryant's condition.
