Sgt. K.R. Snead said Sandra Selene Buie, 35, of 150 Lewis Farm Road, Shannon, was killed when she lost control of her 1994 Lincoln about 3 a.m. Sunday on N.C. 71. Snead said the car went off the road to the right, but Buie overcorrected, and the vehicle skidded across the road to the left shoulder and struck a culvert before coming to rest in a drainage ditch.
Buie, who was traveling west on N.C. 71 near the intersection of Chason Road when the accident occurred, wasn't wearing a seat belt, Snead said.
According to Trooper Robert Reaves, preliminary results of an investigation show Buie may have fallen asleep at the wheel of her car, Snead said.
In a separate incident today, a Florida man was killed in a single-car accident on Interstate 95.
The man, whose identity wasn't available this morning, was killed in a head-on collision with a tree off I-95 near St. Pauls. The accident occurred about 7 a.m.
The driver of the Mitsubishi Mirage, traveling north on I-95, was taken to Southeastern Regional Medical Center and was in critical condition this morning, according to Snead.
