Isley Murchison "Murk" Biggs, 80, of 2900 Shaw Ave., died Feb. 25, 2005, at Southeastern Regional Medical Center.
The funeral will be at 2:30 p.m. Monday at First Baptist Church of Lumberton, Dr. Russell Cherry officiating. Burial will follow at Meadowbrook Cemetery.
He was born on Sept. 13, 1924, in Lumberton and was educated in the public schools of Lumberton. He was a graduate of Wake Forest University, Wake Forest Law School and did postgraduate work at Harvard Law School. He practiced law in Lumberton for more than 50 years and was inducted into the N.C. Bar Association's General Practice Hall of Fame in 1990. He also served as president and chairman of Biggs Park Mall and K.M. Biggs Inc.
He served the community in many capacities, including as a member of the board of trustees of Wake Forest University and Southeastern General Hospital, chairman of the Robeson County chapter of the American Red Cross, president of the Lumberton Kiwanis Club, ambassador of the Sudan Temple and president of the Lumberton Shrine Club. He also served as board attorney to Robeson Community College, the Robeson County Board of Education and the City of Lumberton.
He was a lifetime member of First Baptist Church of Lumberton, serving as a member and secretary of the board of deacons. He was also a teacher in the men's fellowship class for more than 20 years,
He was preceded in death by his parents, Furman Kenneth Biggs and Kate Britt Biggs, and brothers, Furman K. Biggs Jr. and John Duckett Biggs.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Janis Bolton Biggs of the home, a son, Murchison B. "Bo" Biggs and his wife, Gayla G. Biggs, of Lumberton; a daughter, Catharine B. Arrowood; and a granddaughter, Jeannette Arrowood of Raleigh.
