LUMBERTON - No one was seriously injured when a car driven by a Lumberton High School student struck a school bus near Lumberton on Monday.

No students were on the bus. The bus driver, Betty Holmes, was treated and released from Southeastern Regional Medical Center.

The driver of the 2001 Ford, Rafael Perez, 17, of 85 N. Baucom Ave., Lumberton, was charged with failing to yield at a stop sign, according to Trooper G.B. Nance of the state Highway Patrol. Perez and two passengers in the car were not injured, Nance said.

Nance said Perez was stopped at a stop sign on Mount Olive Church Road and had attempted to cross N.C. 211 when his car was struck. The bus was traveling about 30 mph.

The accident caused $5,000 in damage to the Ford and $2,500 in damage to the bus, according to the report.
