LUMBERTON - With Lumberton High's miraculous run through the Two Rivers Conference baseball tournament complete, they will now turn their attention to the second season.

The Pirates, 18-9, will open the state's Class 4-A playoffs on Tuesday at New Hanover High, 13-11, in Wilmington.

The Pirates, who won the conference title with three one-run wins last week, enter the playoffs as the wildcard out of the Two Rivers Conference. The New Hanover Wildcats are the champions of the Mid-Eastern Conference.

Lumberton is playing in its third straight state playoff tournament. Last season, the Pirates came one win away from playing for the Class 4-A championship, finishing 27-3 for the season.

On Tuesday, the Pirates will likely start Mac Read on the mound. Read was 8-4 during the regular season.

A Pirates win against New Hanover will send them into the second round for a Friday game against the winner of Tuesday's game between Pinecrest, 19-4, of the Mid-Southeastern Conference and J.H. Rose, 16-8, of the Coastal Conference.

- St. Pauls High also opens the playoffs Tuesday with a Class 2-A opener against South Columbus, 17-6, out of the Waccamaw Conference.

The Bulldogs are 17-5.
