Being a non-partisan election year and 58 seats are up for grabs; the municipal filing period opens Friday.

Among those seats are a two-year term for mayor of Red Springs and three town council seats that run for four-year terms.

According to the Robeson County Board of Elections, the period begins at noon this Friday and runs through till noon on Wednesday, July 20. Filing fee for mayors is $25 and $15 for council seats.

Red Springs Town Commissioners John McNeill, Linda McQueen Mack and E.H. Alexander all see their terms expire as does Red Springs Mayor, the Honorable George T. Paris.

Only one change takes place in the election process this year and that is a new state law requiring candidates that are running complete a two-hour training course for their campaign treasurers.

All candidates must have a treasurer who is also required to take the course. Time limit to take the course has been set at 60 days before the election takes place. The election takes place in November.

In other area races:

* Lumber Bridge n two council seats for four-year terms.

* Rennert n three council seats for four-year terms.

Editor’s Note: The Red Springs Citizen will keep track of all those candidates who file and welcome each candidate to supply the newspaper with a picture and biographical information about themselves for publication. Call 910-843-4631 to line up a possible interview.
