MAXTON - A Maxton man says he was severely beaten Sunday but no charges have been filed, apparently because the victim would not cooperate with lawmen.

Deputy Charles Jacobs, responding to a call of a fight at about 5:45 a.m., found Herman Ray Locklear Jr., 41, lying on the ground near his home on Chalmers Drive. His face was covered in blood. Locklear's father was nearby.

According to a sheriff's report, Herman Locklear Sr. said he heard about the incident on his scanner and left for the scene. He said while on the way, he saw four men run past him.

Locklear was transported to Southeastern Regional Medical Center.

Detective Sgt. Dru Martin said he attempted to investigate, but the younger Jacobs “was out of control. I gave him a chance to make a statement, but he wouldn't.”
