Johnson was born Sept. 5, 1923, in Richmond, Va.
Johnson worked as a manager for the Federal Credit Union of New York City, and he also served as chairman for the Credit Union Board for New York State. He worked with the United States Postal Service, he was a health care representative for the Southeastern Region. He was a member of the Fairmont Chamber of Commerce, a member of the board of trustees at Southeastern Regional Medical Center in Lumberton, was on the United Way board of directors, the Robeson County Transportation Advisory Board, Robeson County Health Steering Committee, Carolina Commerce and Technology Center, vice chairman, and he also served in the United States Army.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Sidney and Geneva P. Johnson.
Surviving are his wife, Nina G. Johnson of the home; a son, Barry Johnson of Bronx, N.Y.; a daughter, Adrien R. Riley and her husband Duncan, both of Cambria Heights, N.Y.; a niece, Dale Ward; two grandchildren, Chanston D. Melvin and Deshon Riley; three adopted grandchildren, Mercedes Bruce, Kimberly Bruce and William Bruce.
Memorials may be made at Southeastern Hospice House, 1100 Pine Run Drive, Lumberton, N.C.
The family will receive friends following the funeral.
