Dennis Paul McCarthy, 82, died Aug. 24, 2008, at Southeastern Hospice House.
The funeral will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Francis De Sales Catholic Church, with Father Robert Yankevitch and Father David Fitzgerald officiating. Burial will follow at Gardens of Faith Cemetery.
McCarthy was born on Sept. 5, 1925, in Rosedale, N.Y. He left his home at age 17 to join the U.S. Army Air Corp., which led him to Maxton Air Force base, where he learned to fly military gliders and met Mary Florence Britt. At the end of World War II, he married Mary in 1945, and they started their family shortly thereafter. He lived and raised his family in Lumberton. He was a businessman and farmer. He was also known for his love of horses. In his retirement years he made a hobby of rebuilding antique buggies and carriages. He had a great love for his family as well as his many friends. His presence on Earth will be greatly missed.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Mary Britt McCarthy and a grandson, Paul Elam McCarthy.
Surviving are a son Mike McCarthy and his wife, Margaret; three daughters, Colleen McCarthy Brown and her husband, Ron, Sharon McCarthy Johnson, and Rosemary McCarthy Mareka and husband, Joe; six grandchildren, Patrick Brown and wife, Laura, Dee Dee McCarthy Rouse and husband, David, Michelle McCarthy Smith and husband, Graham, Matthew Mareka, Tiffany Mareka Powell and husband, Wesley, and Casey Mareka; and four great-grandchildren, Marshall Rouse, Abigail Brown, Austin Brown, and Bailey Powell.
Memorials may be made to Paul Elam McCarthy Memorial Scholarship Fund, NC Agricultural Foundation, Campus Box 7645, Raleigh, N.C. 27695 or to a charity of your choice.
The visitation will be 6 to 8 tonight at Floyd Mortuary & Crematory Inc., and other times at the home of Mike and Margaret McCarthy, 703 W. 28th St.
