LUMBERTON — A property on Kenny Biggs Road that once housed a trucking company has been slated for the auction block by its owner.
The vacant property is one of 61 sites that YRC Worldwide is selling. Most sites are in the Southwest and Midwest, with the remaining sites in New England, Texas and Los Angeles.
The 3.30-acre site, located not far from Lumberton Regional Airport in an area zoned for agricultural use, houses a building with 931 square feet of office space. The property also includes 2,025 square feet of dock area and a 20-door cross dock terminal.
According to a statement announcing the sale — to be administered by NRC Reality & Capital Advisors LLC — YRC Worldwide has “one of the largest less- than-truckload networks in North America. The company has designated the Lumberton property, as well as the other sites it plans to sell, as surplus property. Closing of the facilities has been an ongoing process over the past several years.
“Our vacant sites are currently a liability with substantial holding cost, maintenance and real estate taxes,” Jamie Pierson, chief financial officer of YRC Worldwide, a Fortune 500 company headquartered in Overland Park, Kan., said in a statement. “We have chosen the auction process to monetize these properties and turn a liability into an asset which can be quickly reinvested in our business.”
Greg Cummings, Robeson County’s industrial developer, said the property is smaller than 10,000 square feet so it does not meet the minimum size requirements to be marketed on Robeson County’s website or the website of North Carolina Southeast, a regional development group headquartered in Elizabethtown.
Cummings did say, however, that the sale of the property would not have a major economic impact on Robeson County.
“Numerous trucking companies like this one were at one time looking to be close to the interstates,” Cummings said. “But with the economy the way it is now, trucking is not a good business.”
According to the statement announcing the sale, the properties will be sold through NRC’s “buy one, some or all” bid format. The bid deadline is March 15.
