HONOLULU — Fairmont native William McGirt, despite battling an uncooperative putter, shot a final-round 69 on Sunday to finish tied for 19th in the Sony Open, and pocketed $69,025 — his largest payday on the PGA Tour.

After opening with rounds of 67, 67 and 70, McGirt stood tied for 28th place entering the last round, and a bogey on No. 2 dropped him further down the scoreboard, but he finished his round with two birdies, on Nos. 9 and 12, and no more bogeys to steadily climb upward.

“Not a bad start to the year,” McGirt said on his Facebook page. “Didn’t make any putts on the weekend but I hit my irons really well. Lots of positives to build on. Good things ahead.”

For the week, McGirt had 55 pars, the most in the field, and just five bogeys, the fourth fewest in the field, but he ranked 63rd in putting among the 70 players to make the cut. He hit 76.4 percent of the greens in regulation, tying him for third best in the event.

His 19th place finish was his second best on PGA Tour.

It was the first start of the year for McGirt, who is already in the field for the Farmers Insurance Open that begins Jan. 26 and the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am that begins Feb. 9. Before the Sony Open, McGirt was No. 2 on the alternate list for this week’s Humana Challenge, and it was unclear as this was being written if that status had improved with his Sony Open finish.

Johnson Wagner shot a final-round 67 to finish at 13-under-par 267 and take the Sony Open’s first place check of $990,000. Carl Pettersson, a former N.C. State golfer, was among four players tied for second and pocketed $363,000.
