G.L. Pridgen is married to another dancer, Wendy Pridgen. He is serving his first term in the N.C. House of Representatives and is retired from Bell South. He and Wendy have three sons, a daughter, and seven grandchildren.
Gladys Dean is the mayor of Maxton and has a daughter.
The two will come together to compete in the Dancing with the Robeson County Stars competition on March 24 at the Southeastern Agricultural Center. The United Way event asks community members to support their favorite couple by voting with a $10 donation.
The couple recently got their music and plan to start practicing soon.
“It’s something like a rumba or something,” Pridgen said. “I listened to it the other day and I was like, ‘I have to do steps to that?’ If you never saw me dance before, they call that the comedy routine. Coordination is not my strong point on dancing.”
Proceeds raised through ticket sales and donations will be used to bring the Dolly Parton Imagination Library to the county. The Dolly Parton Imagination Library, which was established in 1996 by country singer Dolly Parton, provides a free book monthly to children 5 and under.

“If you can’t read and understand, you aren’t going to understand math or anything,” Pridgen said. “Reading, writing and arithmetic, as they used to say — reading is the most important because if you can’t read then you can’t do the other things.”
